Blanca Fernandez Wins Second Straight Cross Country Meet

HAVERFORD, Pa. - For a second straight meet, Temple's Blanca Fernandez beat out the rest of the field for the women's cross country team. This week it was the Main Line Invite, and Fernandez finished the three-mile course in 16:27 to place first in a field of 75 runners.
Fernandez is competing in her first cross country season for the Owls after transferring to Temple in January. She is a national-caliber athlete who earned All-America honors in both indoor and outdoor track this past spring, while also setting five Temple school records.
Sophomore Katie Pinson ran the course in 18:10 to finish 28th for the Owls, while freshman Maddie Bixler placed 36th in 18:37. Freshman Alexis O'Shea was close behind Bixler in 38th (18:50), and a group of four Owls ran together and finished 44th (Katie Leisher), 45th (Megan Schneider), 46th (Brigit Andersson) and 47th (Ashton Dunkley).
"Competitively, this meet was a step up from what we've seen so far this year," said coach James Snyder. "I was really pleased with the way our women competed through the duration of the race. We moved through the group and are making great progress. Blanca taking the individual win has me excited to see what she can do against an NCAA-level field in two weeks at the Paul Short."
As a team, Temple placed fourth among the six teams competing with the order of finish being Villanova, Penn, Swarthmore, Temple, La Salle and Haverford.
Temple will take next weekend off from competing, and will return to action at the Paul Short Invitational hosted by Lehigh University on Oct. 2.
