Owls Prominent in NFL Playoffs
1.18.16 | Football
PHILADELPHIA – Yesterday, Temple's all-time leading scorer, Brandon McManus, showed the country what the members of Owl Nation knew for a long time – that boy can kick!
McManus kicked an NFL post-season record tying five field goals leading the Denver Broncos to a 23-16 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers and earning the Broncos a berth in the AFC Championship Game next week against the New England Patriots.
The 2013 Temple grad made field goals of 28, 41, 51, 41, and 45 yards keeping the home team in the game before its only touchdown of the contest at the 57:00 minute mark put them ahead for good. The 51-yarder is the second best in team playoff history and all were made difficult by a swirling wind.
"It was the worst wind that I have had in my career at any level," McManus said to reporters after the game. "In warm-ups there was zero wind. Then I come back out five minutes before the game and it's a howling 30 mph wind. I had to learn quickly what it was going to do."
The Broncos resume their chase for the Super Bowl when the New England Patriots come to Denver next Sunday, January 24. Kickoff for that game is 3:05 p.m. ET.
Incidentally, New England employs Patrick Stewart as an area scout. Stewart was the assistant director of football operations for Temple in 2006.
The NFL team with the strongest cherry flavor is the Arizona Cardinals. Led by head coach Bruce Arians who held the same position for the Owls from 1983-88, Arizona won an overtime thriller on Saturday defeating the Green Bay Packers 26-20. The Cardinals quest for Super Bowl 50 continues in Charlotte where they take on the Carolina Panthers on Sunday at 6:40 p.m. ET. Arians coaching staff includes Kevin Ross (who played for the Owls from 1980-83), Amos Jones (Owls' coach from 1983-88) and Nick Rapone (Owls' coach from 1983-88 and again from 1999-2005). The Cardinals VP of Communications, Mark Dalton, is a proud Temple alum (Class of '89).
The Panthers also have a Temple representative on staff. Al Holcomb, the Panthers linebackers coach, was a graduate assistant for the Owls from 1995-96.
