Men's Basketball Falls in Final Seconds at ECU, 64-61

1.27.16 | Men's Basketball

GREENVILLE, N.C. - Kentrell Barkley converted a three-point play in the final seconds to lift East Carolina (10-11, 2-6 American) to a 64-61 win over visiting Temple (11-8, 5-3) Wednesday night at Minges Coliseum.

It marked the second straight win for ECU over a top tier conference foe as the Pirates were coming off an 84-83 victory at Memphis Sunday.  The Owls, fresh off an 89-80 upset over #8 SMU, saw their season best three-game win streak come to an end.

Barkley's winner came off a Quenton DeCosey block of a Prince Williams' drive to the basket.  The ball landed in Barkley's hands in the lane where he made a strong move to the basket for a lay-up and foul with 1.8 seconds to play.

After the ECU forward converted the free throw, Temple's Josh Brown heaved the ball the length of the court to Obi Enechionyia.  His shot, which would only be a two-point attempt, rimmed out to end the contest.

Enechionyia, starting in place of senior captain Jaylen Bond, tied for game scoring honors with 18 points.  DeCosey added 14 points and a game-high 11 rebounds for his third double-double of the season.

Bond, the Owls' leading rebounder (8.2 rpg) and third leading scorer (9.9 rpg), missed his second straight game due to a lower back injury.

Freshman Ernest Aflakpui had his best game in a Temple uniform, setting season highs in points (8), rebounds (10) and minutes (33).

Prince Williams, who scored seven of the final 10 points for ECU, led the Pirates with 18 points. Barkley posted a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds while B.J. Tyson added 14 points.

The game featured 12 ties and 14 lead changes with the largest lead being a five-point margin by the Owls in the second half, 52-47.

Following Enechionyia's three-pointer that gave Temple its 52-47 advantage, the Owls were held scoreless for over six minutes.  During that stretch, ECU went on a 7-0 run to take a 54-52 lead, one it would not relinquish.

Temple tied the contest four times over the final 3:05, the last coming on two free throws by Brown with 21 seconds to play. Barkley's game-winner came on the ensuing possession.

Temple next travels to Tampa to take on USF Sunday (2:00 pm/CBS Sports Network/1210 AM WPHT).
