Volleyball Sweeps League-Leading Cincinnati

CINCINNATI -- The Temple volleyball team used an all-around team effort to sweep league-leading Cincinnati on the road on Sunday afternoon. The 3-0 win (25-18, 25-19, 25-20) improves the Owls to 14-6 overall, 7-3 in conference play, while the Bearcats move to 12-8 overall, 8-2 in the American.

Temple held Cincinnati to just a .145 attack, racking up 8.5 blocks and 45 digs in the 3-0 sweep.

Junior Irem Asci tallied 13 kills to lead the Owls, also adding 15 digs for her second-straight double-double. Senior Tyler Davis and junior Izzy Rapacz each picked up seven kills, with Rapacz adding nine digs and four blocks. Senior Kirsten Overton went 5-0-11 on the day, hitting .455 with three blocks. Junior setter Kyra Coundourides tallied 29 assists with five digs and four kills. Rounding out the box score, junior Janine Simmons had two kills and four blocks, while sophomore Mia Heirakuji had eight digs.

Temple gabbed the lead early in the first set and did not relinquish the advantage. An Asci kill put the Owls up 8-4, before Cincinnati battled back to make it 12-10. Temple responded with five-straight points to take its largest lead of the frame at 17-10. The Bearcats strung together three in a row late in the set to cut the lead to 23-18, but the Owls ended it on an Asci kill and a Cincinnati error.

Cincinnati started hot in set two, opened up a 6-3 lead on the Owls. A Tyler Davis kill then sparked a 12-4 Temple run that gave the Owls a 15-10 advantage. After a Bearcat timeout, Cincinnati rallied to cut it to a 19-16 Temple lead, but the Owls closed out the set, winning it on a block from Rapacz and Simmons.

Set three was the closest of the day, but Davis and Asci combined for nine kills to lead the Owls in the frame. Tied at 15-15 after back-and-forth volleyball to open the set, the Owls took control. Temple scored four of the next six points to make it 20-17 on a block from Asci and Simmons. Cincinnati used its final timeout of the set, but Temple rolled out of the break, scoring four-straight to make it 23-17. The Bearcats got to within three at 23-20, but the Owls finished them off with back-to-back Asci kills to complete the sweep.

Temple has short rest this week, as the Owls host UConn on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. It's the Owls' annual "White Out" game and fans will receive free t-shirts.
