Gomez Sanchez Knocks In Overtime Game-Winner to Top UCF 1-0
10.29.16 | Men's Soccer
PHILADELPHIA – Jorge Gomez Sanchez played the hero in the Owls' final home game of the season, posting an overtime game-winner to top the UCF Knights 1-0. With the win, Temple men's soccer completed an unbeaten home slate with a record of 8-0-2.
The Owls now stand at 10-5-2, marking head coach David MacWilliams' seventh 10-win season and fourth in the past five seasons.
Battling through 90 minutes of regulation without a goal, the Owls posted 17 shots without finding the back of the net. Gomez Sanchez nearly broke the tie with a left-footed boot that was saved by the Knights' goalkeeper Matt Rosenberg.
After drawing a foul in the box, Stefan Mueller set up for a penalty kick that rolled into the right post and deflected out of the net.
Alex Cagle posted a single save throughout the 94 minutes in the second half of regulation to avoid a UCF victory.
Moving into the first overtime period, Jordan Wix Rauch went on the attack and sent a cross that found Gomez Sanchez in front of the net and sent in a boot to the top right corner of the net. The goal marked Gomez Sanchez's 14th goal of the season, pushing him to fifth all-time for single-season goals.
He now holds 31 total points on the season which ties his 2015 mark.
Temple has one game left in the regular season and will hit the road for a match against USF for Saturday, Nov. 5.
