– In the Owls' fourth-ever match against the dominant SMU Mustangs, Jorge Gomez Sanchez
knocked in an early goal to give Temple men's soccer its first ever victory over the 2015 American regular-season champions. The win also marked the Owls' first victory in American Athletic Conference play this season.
Temple now stands at 7-3-1 overall and 1-1-1 in the conference, placing them in a tie for the crucial fourth place spot in the conference standings.
The Owls were able to put on some early pressure with Gomez Sanchez posting the first shot of the game just five minutes into game play. The team was also able to grab the first corner kick of the game that gave them a second strong scoring opportunity off the head of Mark Grasela
Less than 15 minutes into the game, Gomez Sanchez was able to post his 12th goal of the season after catching a pass from Matt Mahoney
and sneaking one through the near post from 15 yards out.
With the goal, Gomez Sanchez moved himself into a seventh-place tie for the program's most career goals with 25 currently. He is one goal away from matching his season goal total from 2015 with six regular-season games remaining.
Looking to post his fourth consecutive shutout, Alex Cagle
held strong in the net while facing 17 shots from an aggressive SMU offense. The goalkeeper posted seven saves to secure the win and the shutout over the Mustangs.
The Owls return to the field on Tuesday for a non-conference match against Columbia at 7:30 p.m. The game is set to be held at Manhattanville College in in Purchase, N.Y.
