PHILADELPHIA -- Backed by a .419 team attack, the Temple volleyball team swept East Carolina, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon at McGonigle Hall. Temple took the match 25-16, 25-19, 25-20, to improve to 19-7 overall, 12-4 in The American, while ECU dips to 14-12 overall, 4-12 in conference play.

All of Temple's hitters hit .286 or higher, as Temple combined for its second-best hitting performance of the season. East Carolina entered the match with a conference-best block, averaging 2.25 per set, but the Owl hitters were blocked just once all match. Temple, meanwhile, held a 39-31 advantage in digs, while holding the Pirates to .155 attack.

Junior Irem Asci hit .552 in the match, recording 19 kills and just three errors, while adding nine digs. Classmate Izzy Rapacz tallied 11 kills, hitting .450, while adding eight digs. Senior Caroline Grattan had seven kills and a pair of blocks, while senior Kirsten Overton had six kills, without an error (hitting .375), with a match-best four blocks. Sophomore Iva Deak tallied four kills and three blocks, while junior Kyra Coundourides dished out 43 assists, adding seven digs. Rounding out the individual stats, sophomore Mia Heirakuji tallied nine digs to tie for match-high honors.

The Owls hit .419 in the first frame, turning a 6-5 edge into a 14-7 lead with an 8-2 surge. ECU cut it to a five-point deficit at 15-10, but Temple used kills from Deak, Asci, and Overton to push it to 23-13. ECU scored three-straight out of a time-out, but the Owls got winners from Asci and Rapacz to end set one, 25-16.

In set two, Temple led by as many as four, before a 3-0 run from ECU tied the match at 15-15. From there, Temple regrouped, rallying for a 22-18 advantage on a Rapacz kill. After ECU called its final timeout of the frame, Temple ended it on kills from Grattan and Asci and a ECU attack error to make it 25-19 and 2-0.

Set three was tied at 6-6 before Temple took over. The Owls pushed their advantage to 14-9 before ECU battled back to withing four at 15-11. Temple used another run, this time, 8-4 to open up a 23-15 lead. ECU answered with four of the next six points, but Temple closed out the set and match on a Grattan kill.

The Owls are back in action next weekend at Florida rivals, UCF (Friday) and USF (Sunday).
