High-Powered Offense Leads Volleyball to Sweep at Tulane

11.6.16 | Women's Volleyball

NEW ORLEANS -- Temple volleyball hit a massive .432 en route to a 3-0 sweep (26-24, 25-11, 25-15) on the road at Tulane. The win avenges an earlier 3-2 loss to the Green Wave for the Owls, who have now won six-straight to move to 18-6 overall, 11-3 in conference play. Tulane slips to 14-12 overall, 6-8 in The American.

The Owls' offense was firing on all cylinders, as Temple hit a season-best .432. The cherry and white made just six errors in the entire match, a program low, since the 2012 season when the Owls made only five errors in a 3-0 sweep against Cleveland State.

Individually, junior Irem Asci had 19 kills on 31 swings to hit .548, while classmate Izzy Rapacz recorded 11 kills, hitting .409 with four blocks. Sophomore Iva Deak notched seven kills on nine attempts to hit .667, while senior Tyler Davis added seven kills, hitting .333. The architect of the offense was junior setter Kyra Coundourides, who dished out 40 assists, adding nine digs in the win.

Defensively, sophomore Mia Heirakuji picked up a match-best 14 digs. Elsewhere, Asci added nine digs, while junior Dara Peric had seven digs with two aces.

Temple hit .312 in the first set, but trailed 10-6 after Tulane rattled off six-straight points. Temple battled back to get within a point on three occasions, but Tulane went up 22-20 on a Temple service error. From there, Rapacz and junior Janine Simmons each added kills in a 3-1 run that tied the match at 23-23. Tulane pushed forward to grab set point on a Temple block error, but the Owls got three-straight kills, one from Rapacz, and two from Asci to complete the comeback with a 26-24 win.

The Owls were nearly untouchable in set two, as Temple recorded 13 kills on 18 swings without an error to hit .722. It was a 9-1 start for the Owls, and the lead stayed above 10 for much of the set. Two-straight kills from Deak made it 15-3 and Temple later pushed it 20-7. Two-straight Tulane points didn't deter the Owls, who closed out the set on a 5-2 run to win it 25-11.

Looking for the sweep in the third set, Temple turned a 3-3 tie into a 12-3 lead with an incredible, 9-0 run. During the surge, Asci notched three kills, while Rapacz had a pair with a block. Temple's lead ballooned to 22-12 before Tulane strung together a a 3-1 to to make it 23-15. From there, the Owls got a kill from Asci and a solo block from Simmons to close out the sweep with a 25-15 win.

Temple is back in action on Friday, November 11, hosting Cincinnati in a battle for the top of the American Athletic Conference standings. The match begins at 7:00 p.m. and a "Cherry Out" means fans will receive free t-shirts.
