Temple Announces 2016 Football Schedule
2.9.16 | Football
PHILADELPHIA – The American Athletic Conference today announced the 2016 football schedule for its 12 member schools. Temple University now has a complete schedule of opponents and dates for its conference and non-conference games this season.
Temple will open the year with four consecutive non-conference games before beginning defense of its American Athletic East Division Championship in conference play. The season will kick-off with two home games at Lincoln Financial Field - Saturday, September 3, the Owls take on Army followed by a first-ever meeting with Stony Brook on the 10th. The Owls take a trip to State College, Pa., for a battle with in-state rival Penn State on September 17, before returning for Homecoming Weekend on Saturday, September 24 against Charlotte.
Conference play begins on October 1 when Temple hosts SMU. This will be the fifth meeting with the Mustangs, but the first in Philadelphia. Back-to-back games in late October, including a Friday night tilt against USF, highlight the home schedule. The Owls seek revenge against the Bulls who knocked the Cherry and White out of the Top 25 late last season (albeit just for one week) before hosting Cincinnati, a perennial favorite to lead the conference. The home slate closes with a matchup against East Carolina on November 26.
For the second straight year, the American Athletic Conference will hold a Championship game. The two division winners meet at the home of the school with the better record. In the inaugural game, Temple traveled to Houston and lost 24-13. This season, the Owls look to bring that game, on Saturday, December 3, to Philadelphia.
Temple plays seven home games this year and just five road games. The bye week will take place in mid-November, after playing 10 straight games.
