-- The Temple women's rowing team opened the season by pulling double duty on the Schuylkill River on Saturday. The Owls raced Lehigh and Delaware in the morning session, before returning to the water to take on Boston College in the afternoon. Overall, the Owls had a strong showing, coming away with a pair of varsity victories amidst several strong finishes.
Temple won both the varsity eight and the varsity four races in the morning, competing against Delaware and Lehigh. The varsity eight clocked in with a 6:36.10 in the 2,000-meter race, the fastest time of the day. The Owls out-paced Lehigh (6:44.71) and Delaware (6:49.39) in the race.
In varsity four racing, it was Temple vs. Delaware, with the Owls cruising to a 17-second victory. Temple recorded a time of 7:39.85, ahead of the Blue Hens' 7:56.88.
The Owls finished second in both the second varsity eight and second varsity/novice four faces. In the eight event, Temple notched a 6:59.62, behind Delaware (6:51.26) but ahead of Lehigh (7:08.86). In the second varsity four race, the Owls 2V was second to Delaware, 7:45.94 to 8:02.74, while the Temple novice four finished third in 8:14.24.
Wrapping up the morning session, the Owls' novice eight finished second to Delaware. The Blue Hens won the event in 7:10.49, followed by the Temple in 7:15.78, for the closest race of the morning.
In the afternoon session, the Owls had a number of strong races against ACC power Boston College. Though BC took all six races, Temple was within seven seconds of the Eagles in three varsity races. In the varsity eight, BC clocked in at 6:41.01, while Temple was right behind with a 6:47.12. In the second varsity eight, Temple again had just a six second deficit, as BC took it, 6:51.89 to 6:57.95.
The closest race of the afternoon session came in the varsity four event, where the Owls' boat was under four seconds off the pace of Boston College. The Eagles won it in a time of 7:36.50, while Temple finished in 7:40.41.
Also racing strong, Temple's novice eight put up a fight against BC's third varsity boat, as the Eagles clocked in at 7:04.90 to Temple's 7:16.10.
Temple is back in action next Saturday, hosting the Murphy Cup on the Schuylkill River. More information on the event will be posted at owlsports.com/murphycup
