Temple Fencing Season Concludes at NCAA Championships

3.25.16 | Women's Fencing

WALTHAM, Mass. - The season has concluded for Temple fencing after two days of competition at the NCAA Championships, hosted by Brandeis University. The Owls placed 11th of the 21 women's teams represented at the national meet, and had four fencers represent the program.

Sophomore Safa Ibrahim, competing for a second year in a row, was Temple's highest finisher, taking 17th in epee. Senior Jessica Hall placed 21st in epee in her first-ever appearance at the NCAA Championships. Ibrahim won 10 of 23 bouts, while Hall won eight.

In sabre, senior Petra Khan placed 19th for the Owls, and senior Demi Antipas placed 23rd in foil.

While the placements were not high ones for Temple, head coach Nikki Franke was not at all disappointed in the effort and toughness displayed by the Owls, in particular the three seniors who were all competing at the championships for the first time.

"This was a great experience for those three seniors to have before they leave," she said. "I was very pleased with how hard the girls fenced all the way to the end and how focused they were. What makes the NCAA Championships different is that you have 23 tough bouts, all one after the other. It wears on you mentally and emotionally, and this group did a great job handling that constant pressure over two days.

"For Safa in her second time around, she was better able to deal with that pressure after she had trouble with it last year. So in that respect I was very pleased. As a team to finish right in the middle of the standings, that was good. Overall it was a great way to end our season, and now we start looking forward to next year."

Overall the Owls scored 30 points to place 11th among the women's teams, just six points out of the top 10. Columbia was tops among women's teams, followed by Notre Dame in second and Princeton in third.
