Men’s Tennis Closes Out Regular Season with 5-2 Win over Drexel

PHILADELPHIA – The Temple men's tennis team finished out the regular season with a 5-2 win over City Six rival Drexel on Wednesday. The Owls are now on a seven-match winning streak and posted another undefeated home record. With the victory, Temple moved to 20-5 on the season.

In doubles play, Hicham Belkssir and Vineet Naran were able to pick up a 6-4 win at the first flight over Daniil Gizburg and Hamza Laalei. Drexel then took a 6-3 victory at the second flight, as Sinan Orhon and Kashyap Ashok defeated Uladzimir Dorash and Florian Mayer. To clinch the point, Santiago Canete and Artem Kasphuk battled with Balaji Lakshmana and Xabier Saavedra, but the Owls ultimately took the win, 7-6 (11).

Belkssir gave the Owls a 2-0 lead to start singles play after defeating Lakshmanan 6-3,6 -1 at the fifth flight. The Dragons won two straight points as Orhon took down Nicolas Paulus, 6-4, 6-0 at the fourth flight and Ginzburg took a 6-4, 6-1 over Mayer at the sixth flight to tie the match up at 2-2.

However, Kapshuk picked up a 6-2, 6-1 win at the second flight over Andrew Sinai, while Canete sealed the win with a 6-2, 6-4 victory at the first flight over Saavedra. Dorash also picked up a point for Temple after a 5-7, 6-4, 10-7 battle at the third flight with Laalei.

The Owls will head to the American Athletic Conference Tournament in Memphis, Tenn. starting April 21. Seeding for the tournament is to be announced.
