Women's Rowing Wins Lela H. Kerr Cup; Owls Earn Three Golds
4.16.16 | Women's Rowing
PHILADELPHIA -- The varsity eight took home the Lela H. Kerr Cup at the 50th-annual Kerr Cup Regatta, highlighting a fantastic day for the Temple women's rowing team on Saturday.
"Today was an exceptional day for the program," said Head Coach Rebecca Smith Grzybowski. "We made some adjustments after last weekend and everyone really stepped up and committed to finding more speed this week."
All-in-all it was six entries for the Owls and six top-three finishes, including three gold medals. Temple took home the titles in the varsity eight, second varsity eight, and second varsity four races.
"With no boat finishing lower than 3rd place and three gold medals, it was definitely a team win with some hard fought, tenacious finishes," added Grzybowski. "I'm really proud of both the overall effort and result."
In varsity eight action, the Owls snapped Drexel's two-year win streak at their home regatta, taking the cup for the first time since 1993. Temple advanced to the finals with a win in the heats, clocking in at 6:30.95, ahead of a six-team field. In the finals, the Owls won a tight race in a time of 6:36.16, defeating Fordham, Drexel, St. Joseph's, West Point and Lehigh.
Temple's second varsity eight also took home gold. In the heats, the Owls finished in 6:43.18, 1.52 seconds behind St. Joseph's. In the finals, Temple got revenge over the Hawks, winning the race in a time of 6:39.04, 2.48 seconds ahead of second-place St. Joseph's, also defeating Fordham, Drexel, Marist, and Lehigh.
The Owls also secured a gold medal finish in the second varsity four race. With no heats, it was winner take all in the finals, and Temple did just that, clocking in at 7:46.40 to win the race over St. Joseph's, Fordham, and Drexel.
Temple grabbed second place finishes in both of the novice races. In eights racing, Temple won their heat with a time of 7:03.8. In the finals, the Owls finished second to only West Point, recording a 7:00.37. In the fours race, Temple won their heat in open water, clocking in at 8:15.76. In the finals, the Owls finished in 8:07.79, just 0.47 seconds behind Villanova.
Completing the successful day on the Schuylkill, Temple's varsity four boat notched a third place finish. In the heats, the crew took second in 7:39.97, just 1.08 seconds behind Fordham. In a tight finals race, the Owls clocked in at 7:27.58 in a race where just 4.45 seconds decided the top three spots.
Temple is back in action next weekend at the City Championships on the Schuylkill River.
