Men's Crew Earns Five Top-Three Finishes at City Championships

PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple men's crew team notched five top-three finishes, including a win from the second varsity eight at the Bergen Cup on Saturday. The event serves as the unofficial city championships for the Philadelphia crews.Â
Temple's second varsity eight win highlighted the racing action for the Owls. The crew clocked in at 5:51.8, earning a 0.2 second win over second-place Drexel. St. Joseph's was third in the field, recording a time of 6:04.5.
Three other Temple boats finished in second place. The varsity eight had a solid race, coming in at 5:39.1, just behind Drexel's pace of 5:31.6. St. Joseph's (5:49.1) was third, followed by La Salle (6:10.3).Â
In the third varsity eight boat, it was Temple's novice eight who grabbed second. The Owls clocked in at 5:58.4, just off of Drexel's freshman (5:53.3). Drexel's third varsity took third in 6:06.4), followed by the St. Joseph's third varsity (6:08.1) and Temple's third varsity (6:25.2).Â
The Owls' freshman four also finished second, coming in at 7:00.6, behind Villanova's winning time of 6:52.9. Drexel took third in 7:04.6, while St. Joseph's (7:23.1) and La Salle (7:45.5) rounded out the field.Â
Wrapping up the day's highlights, Temple's varsity four took third in a tight race featuring six boats. The top three spots were separated by just 1.6 seconds, with Drexel winning the event in 6:35.4. Villanova took second in 6:36.6, while the Owls' were just 0.4 seconds behind in 6:37.0. Drexel's B boat finished fourth (6:57.9), followed by La Salle's two boats taking fifth (6:58.7) and sixth (7:03.4).Â
