8.16.16 | General
PHILADELPHIA - Temple University Athletics announced today that it is one of the first universities and conferences to be named as an LGBT SportSafe Founders Club member. The department also earned the LGBT SportSafe Inclusion Program GOLD Medallion.
Other LGBT SportSafe Founders Club members include the University of Nebraska, Northwestern University, the University of Oregon and the America East Conference.
"Temple University is proud to be among an elite group of institutions at the forefront of LGBTQ inclusion in sports," said Director of Athletics Dr. Patrick Kraft. "At Temple we value diversity and the welfare of our 500-plus student-athletes. Excellence, not only on the field of competition, but in life is part of our mission as a department as well as a University. So, in keeping with that philosophy, we take great pride in being part of the LGBT SportSafe program as part of its Founders Club." Â
"LGBT SportSafe is excited to welcome Temple University Athletics to the program as a Founders Club member," said Dr. Eric Lueshen, LGBT SportSafe Co-Founder and Managing Director. "Nevin and I applaud Temple's leadership and commitment to LGBT inclusion in the American Athletic Conference."
The LGBT SportSafe Inclusion Program uses a new algorithm approach, called the 3-Peat Model. The program was founded by Nevin Caple and Lueshen in 2016 to help administrators understand how to implement inclusive programming, policies and public awareness initiatives within their respective athletic communities. Member institutions that actively engage in inclusion will be rewarded with a Gold, Silver or Bronze medallion for the athletic department website, a listing in the LGBT SportSafe national registry of inclusive athletic and recreational sport communities, and exclusive access to Coaches Corner, a comprehensive online resource for LGBT inclusion in sports which provides everything from webinars and model policies to discussion forums and best practices for athletic professionals.
"This partnership with LGBT SportSafe demonstrates Temple Athletics continued commitment to providing a safe and inclusive environment to its student-athletes," added Kraft. "We always want to be at the forefront of initiatives such at this that helps contribute to the overall quality of our student-athlete experience."
