Volleyball Sweeps Hampton to Move to 2-0

8.27.16 | Women's Volleyball

PHILADELPHIA – The Temple volleyball team moved to 2-0 on the season with a 3-0 (25-23, 25-15, 25-20) sweep over visiting Hampton. The win gave the Owls the title at the 2016 Sonesta Hotel Philadelphia Temple Invitational. Hampton dips to 0-2 with the loss.

Temple's Izzy Rapacz was named MVP of the tournament following another stand-out performance. The junior led the Owls in nearly every category, racking up 14 kills (hitting .360) with eight digs, five aces, and four blocks on the afternoon. Earning All-Tournament honors were juniors Irem Asci and Kyra Coundourides

The Owls withstood a solid blocking performance by Hampton, who racked up 17 stops at the net. Temple hit .214 to the Pirate's .159, while out-digging Hampton 33-28. Temple also tallied nine service aces on the evening.

Senior Caroline Grattan racked up eight kills on the night, while senior Tyler Davis and junior Janine Simmons had six each. Sophomore Carla Guennewig notched four kills and four blocks, while classmate Hannah Vandegrift picked up 31 assists with six digs. Wrapping up the individual stats, Asci notched three kills and five digs in just one set, while junior Dara Peric had five digs.

Temple got off to a strong start in the first set, backed by three kills from Rapacz and two from Grattan, en route to a 13-4 lead. Hampton responded with three blocks as part of an extended run to cut the Temple lead to just four, 15-11. From there, the Owls used a 5-1 run, capped by a Peric kill to go up 20-12. Hampton had a furious comeback late in the set, including getting the match to 23-22, but Temple got the final two points of the set to seal the win.

Temple kept the momentum in set two, despite a hot start from Hampton. Rapacz sparked the Temple offense to the tune of three-straight aces to force a Pirates timeout with Temple up 8-2. The Owls kept their lead at six, as the teams traded the next 10 points each to make it an 18-12 Temple lead. The Owls then locked up the 2-0 lead, winning set two on a Davis kill that made it a 25-12 final.

Hampton opened up a 5-2 lead in the third set and led as late as 7-5. From there, Temple scored seven out of the next eight points to take their first lead of the match. The Pirates cut the Temple lead to 13-11, but Temple got kills from Grattan and a block from Rapacz and Guennewig to lead 17-13. Hampton wasn't done, scoring three-straight to make it 17-6, but the Owls got a boost from Asci off the bench, who added two kills as part of a 4-0 Temple run to make it 21-16. The Owls then held off another late charge, before ending the set and match on a Guennewig kill.

Temple is off until next weekend when the Owls travel to Puerto Rico to take on Alabama and Virginia Tech. Both matches will be streamed live at http://bit.ly/29QncLi ($).
