Volleyball Falls Short in 3-1 Loss to Alabama

BAYAMON, Puerto Rico -- The Temple volleyball team fell 3-1 to the University of Alabama on Saturday at the Puerto Rico Clasico. The Owls grabbed the second-set, but overall fell 25-15, 22-25, 25-21, 25-21, to move to 2-2 on the season.Â
Temple was out-hit by the Crimson Tide, .255 to .199, but kept each set close, falling by four or less points in three of the four sets.Â
Individually, junior Irem Asci led the Owls with 16 kills, also adding 19 digs for her second-straight double-double. Classmate Izzy Rapacz added 12 kills and five blocks, while senior Kirsten Overton had seven kills and four blocks. Junior Kyra Coundourides notched 42 assists, while junior Dara Peric (8 digs), and sophomores Mia Heirakuji (8 digs), and Iva Deak (5 blocks) rounded out the Temple leaders.
Alabama used a strong start in set one to take an early lead in the match. The Crimson tide went up 8-2, before the Owls cut it to 14-11 on kills from Asci and Rapacz. Alabama stretched the lead back to six on back-to-back blocks, before winning the set, 25-15.
Temple responded with a strong set two in which the Owls hit .333. Tied 14-14, Temple took over momentum with strong blocking from Deak and Overton, en route to a 25-22 victory.
In the third set, Temple held the early edge, but it was tight throughout. The Owls pulled ahead 17-15, but Alabama answered to tie things at 19-19, before running away with the set. The Crimson tide closed things out on a kill, making it a 25-21 win in the set and a 2-1 lead in the match.
The fourth set was all Temple at the outset, as the Owls jumped out to a 7-0 advantage. However, Alabama stormed back to tie things at 12-12, before taking a 17-13 advantage on a 5-1 run. The Owls closed the gap to 23-21 late in the set, but Alabama held on for the 25-22 win to seal the 3-1 match victory.
Temple is back in action on September 9 and 10, hosting the Philadelphia Penn's Landing Cherry and White Challenge.Â
