Women's Tennis Falls to ODU in Season Opener

NORFOLK, Va. – Temple women's tennis opened up its 2017 spring campaign with a 6-1 drop against the ODU Monarchs. Owls junior Yana Khon was able to grab her first victory of the season in the #5 spot.
Khon's victory against the Monarchs' Natalya Malenko highlighted the Owls morning. Khon was able to top Malenko 6-3, 0-6, 6-4.
Making her Temple debuts, Galina Ghernykh grabbed the number one singles spot for the day but was defeated by ODU's Borislava Botusharova 6-1, 6-0. Botusharova currently ranks sixth in singles within the ITA Atlantic Regional Rankings. Chernykh also debuted in doubles with senior Dina Karina in a match that did not finish.
Other pairings for the day were Anais Nussaume and Mariana Bedon, who fell 6-3, and Alina Abdurakhimova with Khon, who were defeated 6-2.
In the singles lineup, Abdruakhimova fell in the number two spot behind Chernykh, followed by Nussaume, Monet Stuckey-Willis, Khon, Bedon, Karina.
The Owls now stand 0-1 on their season and will return to Philadelphia to prepare to host Iowa State on Jan. 27 on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania.
