Track & Field Earns Three Top-Five Finishes at Penn State National

State College, Pa. - Temple women's track and field completed its final day of competition at the Penn State National on Saturday. The squad will return to Philadelphia with three top-five finishes.
In the Owls' first event of the day, freshman Jazmyne Williams made the top-10 in the 500 meter dash after completing the race in 1:17.13 (10th place).

Up next for Temple was the open mile run, ran by junior Katie Pinson. Pinson earned 5th place overall with a time of 5:00.35. Just after, sophomore Katie Leisher and freshman Grace Moore took on the open 3000 meter race. Leisher led the way the entire race, while Moore trailed not too far behind. The duo finished first and third, respectively. Leisher's time of 9:49.02 marks a personal best in the 3K, a whopping 13 seconds faster than her last personal best. Moore finished with a time of 9:52.95 yielding another personal record.

""I think Katie and Grace did a great job working together today," said distance coach James Snyder. "They have two very different approaches to how they race. While Grace is someone who responds really well and is patient early on, progressing throughout the race, Leisher likes to assert herself and get out ahead in the beginning. More exciting than the times is the way they each competed. When you come to this meet you're surrounded by a lot of great athletes so you want to rise to the occasion. Both Katie and Grace did just that and put themselves in a good position to lead in this race today."

The invitational mile run featured freshman Mille Howard who completed the race in 5:02.70. Senior Kenya Gaston represented the Owls in the invitational 400 meter dash as well as the 200 meter dash. Overall, Gaston finished 6th in the 400 meter dash with a time of 57.73. In the 200 meter dash, she ran a 25.57.

"We're a month out from the conference meet right now, so that is our main focus moving forward," said Snyder. " We're putting ourselves in positions now to run our best when it matters the most."

Temple women's track and field will next compete at the Valentine Invitational on Feb. 10 in Boston, Mass.
