Football Inks 25 December Signees via Early Signing Period

12.20.17 | Football

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Ink took to paper early Wednesday morning, as Temple football worked to lock up the first members of its 2018 recruiting class. Under the direction of first-year head coach Geoff Collins, the Owls set an energetic pace, locking up two Swedish commits - OL Oskar Andersson & OL Isaac Moore - at 1:01 a.m. before moving state-side for a total of 24 signees by 8:11 a.m.

With Temple's football team in St. Petersburg preparing for Thursday night's Bad Boy Mower Gasparilla Bowl, Wednesday started for the Owls on the beach before sunrise. A flurry of signings were completed by 7:10 a.m., just 10 minutes into a live signing day show overlooking the Gulf coast.

The class features a number of unique qualities, the most notable of which being that International - not National - Signing Day serves as a more appropriate classification. For the group, six players hail from five countries outside of the United States - Sweden (Andersson & I. Moore), Jamaica (Nickolos Madourie), Cuba (Jose Barbon), Dominican Republic (JD Gomez) and Peru (Jean Paul Rodriguez).

While the Owls presence overseas certainly improved with the recent international signings, Temple's foundation pipelines remained not only open, but exceptionally fruitful. On the day, Temple finished with a class composed of 11 from Pennsylvania and New Jersey combined, five from the South Carolina-Florida-Georgia chain and four out of the Delaware-Maryland-Virginia grouping.

A majority of the signees will enter the program as true freshman while three – Gomez, Rock Ya-Sin and Madourie – bring them talents via transfer from smaller colleges.

The Owls wrapped up with 14 on offense and 11 on defense. From a position perspective, the class finished with six wide receivers, five offensive linemen, five defensive linemen, three cornerbacks, two safeties and one of each a quarterback, tight end, running back and linebacker.

Individually, the addition of Trad Beatty at quarterback will grant Temple five scholarship signal-callers, a first in school history. Further, the Owls will be adding a valedictorian to their team in CB Chauncey Moore.
