. – On Wednesday Crystal Jones
of Temple women's track and field represented the Owls at the Princeton Multi Event Meet hosted at Princeton University. Jones finished third overall in the women's pentathlon with 3413 points, just 85 points under her personal record.
Jones holds the No. 1 spot for the high jump in the American Athletic Conference so far this indoor season at 1.70m. With this week's performance at Princeton, she sits at No.3 in the conference for the indoor pentathlon.
"Crystal's performance in the Princeton Multi Event Meet is a really strong indication of where she'll be in a few weeks, which could be well over 3500 points," said assistant coach Tramaine Ellison
Jones was the sole athlete from Temple at the meet comprised of seven participants from four different schools (Princeton, Coppin State, Adelphi, and Temple). For most of the competition, she trailed just behind just behind Kehmani Roberts of Coppin State in second. She clocked a time of 9.34 in the 60 meter hurdles, followed by a high jump mark of 1.66m. In the shot put, Jones reached a personal best throw of 9.21m, topping her last best of 8.84m. The sophomore jumped a 5.30m in the long jump and rounded out the pentathlon with the 800 meter race, finishing with a time of 2:33.84.
"This meet was her only opportunity to compete in a multi event before the conference meet, so it was very important for us to participate," said Ellison. "Over the next couple of weeks I'm looking to her to improve her marks on the three main events: the high jump, the long jump, and the hurdles. That's what will push her over the top. The key to succeeding in the multi events is the athlete's consistency which means getting through all five events and doing your absolute best in all five. Crystal is right on track to do that."
Temple women's track and field will be back in action on Feb. 10 for the David Hemery Valentine Invitational hosted at Boston University.
