Owls Set for American Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships

PHILADELPHIA – As the regular indoor season comes to a close for Temple women's track and field, the Owls are set for the 2017 American Athletic Conference Indoor Championships. Held at the Birmingham Crossplex in Birmingham, Ala., the two –day meet will take place from Friday Feb. 24 to Saturday Feb. 25. The Owls will be featured in 10 events over the course of the weekend.

Kicking off day one of the meet is the women's pentathlon at 9:00 a.m. featuring sophomore Crystal Jones. Last season, Jones reached a personal best score of 3498 to take fifth place overall in the event at the indoor conference meet. At this year's Princeton Multi Event Meet, the sophomore earned 3413 points (rounded to 3434 due to track size), just 85 under her best. As of this week Jones stands at the No. 3 spot on the conference performance list, just under Naomi Urbano and Katie Straus of Cincinnati.

Jones will also compete in the high jump for Temple this weekend. Her mark of 1.70m reached at the Towson Tiger Invitational in January sits her at second in the conference in the event.

Seniors Bionca St. Fleur and Jimmia McCluskey will represent Temple in the long jump. At the 2016 indoor championships, St. Fleur took second overall in the finals of the event after posting a mark of 6.01 meters, breaking a school record. So far this season, her best stands at a 5.62 (Fastrack Invitational), 10th best in the conference. McCluskey's season best in the event is 5.50 meters. Both the long jump trials and finals will take place on Friday and are set to begin at 3:30 p.m. McCluskey will also participate in the 60 meter dash, aiming to improve her personal best time of 7.80.

The women's mile trial is set to begin at 12:15 p.m. on Friday featuring freshman Millie Howard and junior Katie Pinson. Both Howard and Pinson are coming off of a school record breaking time and personal records in the 1000 meter race at the Artie O'Connor Invitational. At the Seahawk Shootout, Howard posted season best time of 4:55.30 in the event, the seventh-best time in the conference. Pinson, with a season best of 5:00.35, sits at No.17.

Senior Kenya Gaston and freshman Jazmyne Williams will then take on the 400 meter dash. The trials set to begin at 12:45 p.m. on Friday

The 3000 meter race will feature Pinson, as well as Katie Leisher, Grace Moore, and Megan Schneider on Saturday. At the Penn State National, Leisher and Moore both posted personal records in the event. Leisher's time of 9:49.02 beat her personal record by a full 13 seconds. Her performance earned her a first-place finish while Moore trailed not too far behind to finish in third with a time of 9:52.95. Both Leisher's and Moore's times are 9th and 11th in the conference for the 3K race. Leisher and Schneider will also run the 5000 meter race for Temple.

The women's distance medley is set for Friday at 5:00 p.m., ran by Howard, Gaston, Pinson, and Moore.

This season's fastest 4x400 relay time was logged at the Fastrack National Invitational. The team of Gaston, Jones, Howard, and St. Fleur completed the race in 3:54.64.  This weekend,  Williams will fill in for Jones. The relay will take place on Saturday afternoon.

The finals for all track events will take place on Saturday beginning at 11:15 a.m. The weekend will culminate with the awards ceremony at 3:15 p.m.
