Lacrosse Falls at UConn in Regular Season Finale

4.29.17 | Women's Lacrosse

STORRS, Conn. - In the final game of the regular season, Temple lacrosse came up short at UConn by a score of 19-15. It was the final game of the year for the Huskies (8-8, 5-4), but the Owls (13-4, 6-3) move on to face top-seeded and #2 Florida in the semifinals of next week's BIG EAST Championships.

Villanova will serve as the host of the tournament, set for Thursday, May 4 and Saturday, May 6. Fourth-seeded Temple will play Florida in the opening game at 4:30 p.m. on May 4, followed by a 7 p.m. contest between second-seeded Denver and third-seeded Georgetown.

The loss at UConn was the second in a row for the Owls, who had previously won six straight. The game started strong with three straight Temple goals, but the Owls trailed by four at halftime and by seven later in the game before scoring four of the final five goals of the contest.

Carly Demato and Morgan Glassford scored four goals apiece to lead Temple. Demato added an assist, while Glassford picked up a game-high six draw controls and tied for game-high honors with four ground balls. Brenda McDermott scored twice for the Owls, while five other players scored one apiece including freshman Lizzie Frederick who notched her first career goal in the final minutes.

McDermott, Demato and Glassford all scored in less than a two-minute span early in the game, giving Temple a 3-0 lead after just over five minutes of action. UConn twice pulled within a goal before the game saw its first tie at 4-4. After four more ties, the last at 8-8 with three minutes remaining in the first half, the Huskies rattled off three straight goals to end the period and take an 11-8 lead into the break.

The Owls matched that three-goal deficit one more time after UConn scored the first goal of the second half, but Temple was never able to come any closer. The Huskies never scored more than three in a row, but the Owls failed to put together one of their signature second-half runs. They showed some spark in the final four minutes, scoring four of the game's last five goals, but had fallen too far behind.

Rounding out the goal-scorers for Temple were Olivia Thompson, Kira Gensler, Nicole Barretta and Krissy Gallivan. Brooke Williams tallied two assists, as did McDermott in addition to her two goals.

Temple will be making its second-straight BIG EAST Tournament appearance next week. Last year, the Owls beat UConn in the semifinals before falling to Florida in the championship game.
