Temple Hosts Community Day Clinic for Neighborhood Youths

7.11.17 | General, Outreach

PHILADELPHIA - Temple University and Temple Athletics are known for giving back to the community, and today that was vividly on display.

Over 100 fourth through eighth graders from the surrounding community of Temple University had a unique, multi-sport camp experience at the Temple Sports Complex on Tuesday morning thanks to the work of University administration, the Office of Community Relations and the Temple athletics department.

Executive Senior Associate AD/SWA Mary McElroy was the coordinator from the athletics side, with help from University leadership including L. Harrison Jay, Director of Community Partnerships at Temple.

"We wanted to give the community an opportunity to experience non-traditional sports, such as lacrosse and rowing, to have them exposed to a sport that they might not usually participate in," said Jay. "We want to build more of an alliance and partnership as it relates to Yorktown, Beckett and the community within the footprint of Temple. It's so important for these kids to know they have opportunities like scholarships and sport participation."

Coaching staffs from volleyball, men's crew, women's rowing, lacrosse, gymnastics and cross country/track & field were on hand to run clinics for the participating campers.

"It's awesome to be able to share rowing with the community," said women's rowing head coach Rebecca Smith Grzybowski. "Part of what makes Temple so special is the relationship with Philadelphia, especially for rowing. The energy level of these kids is awesome...you kind of feed off of that."
