PHILADELPHIA - The final Philadelphia Big 5 game of the season takes Temple men's basketball to the Palestra to face Penn, where the Owls (9-9, 1-2 Big 5) will look to win their 10th straight in the series against the Quakers (12-5, 0-2 Big 5).
> After dropping two straight heartbreakers at home, the third close game proved to be a charm for the Owls, who got a late go-ahead shot from senior Josh Brown
and used strong defense all game long but particularly on the final possession to defeat Tulsa, 59-58 on Jan. 17.
> Sophomore Quinton Rose
led Temple with 19 points in the Tulsa win, while senior Obi Enechionyia
added 15 - all in the second half. Freshman J.P. Moorman II
led the Owls with seven rebounds including a huge offensive board that led to Brown's game-winning bucket.
> Ten of Temple's 18 games have been decided by five or fewer points, and the Owls are 5-5 in those contests.
> In the Owls' first road win and first American Athletic Conference win on Jan. 10 at SMU, Brown hit the game-winning jumper with 1.2 seconds left for a 66-64 victory, snapping SMU's streak of 33 straight home wins.
> Rose is the Owls' leading scorer with 14.9 ppg, ranking 11th in the league. Alston is averaging 13.3 ppg (14th in the AAC).
> Either Rose or Alston have led or tied for the team lead in scoring in 14 of 18 of Temple's games in 2017-18.
> The Quakers are having a strong season at 12-5 overall and a perfect 3-0 in the Ivy League so far, winning their last three games vs. Princeton (76-70), Cornell (69-61) and Columbia (77-71).
>Three players average double figures in scoring for Penn, led by sophomore guard Ryan Betley with 15.4 points per game. Sophomore forward AJ Brodeur averages 12.1 ppg and a team-leading 6.5 rebounds per game.
> Penn has made 10 or more three-pointers in eight of 17 games, including in six of the last 10 contests. The Quakers average 35.6 percent from long range, led by Betley who has hit 45-of-111 three-pointers (.405).
> Just after Thanksgiving, Penn won an epic four-overtime battle at Monmouth, 101-96. It was the second 4OT game in program history, with the other occurring in 1920.
> Temple and Penn are meeting for the 72nd time, with the Owls holding a 49-22 lead in the all-time series.
> The Owls have won the last 10 straight meetings, including a 70-62 home win last year and a 77-73 victory at the Palestra the year before.
> Penn's last win in the series came back on Jan. 24, 2007, when the Quakers edged the Owls 76-74 at the Palestra.
> Temple head coach Fran Dunphy
served as the head coach of the Quakers for 17 seasons (1989-2006), leading Penn to 10
Ivy League Championships, nine NCAA Tournaments and a 310-163 record over that span.
> Coach Dunphy is now 10-1 against his former team as head coach at Temple.
> Penn head coach Steve Donahue, in his second season, was an assistant coach at Penn under Dunphy from 1990-2000. Donahue is 1-2 against Temple, with the win coming during the 2010 NCAA Tournament when he was head coach at Cornell.
