Tulane Block Halts Volleyball's Winning Ways

PHILADELPHIA -- Visiting Tulane used a stout block to halt the Temple volleyball team's offense on Sunday, upending the Owls, 3-0, with set scores of 25-18, 25-17, and 25-22. The Green Wave improved to 17-7 overall (5-4 American), while Temple dipped to 5-16, 2-7 in conference play.

Keys to the Match
> Coming off its best hitting performance of the season on Friday night, the Owls' couldn't get the offense going, hitting just .154 in the match.
> Tulane racked up 11 blocks on the night and hit .333 as a team to win their fifth-straight match.
> Temple had an early lead in the first set, but Tulane closed it out and never trailed in set two.
> The Owls got a rally together in the third, but a late comeback from the Green Wave ended the match in a sweep.

Individual Highlights
> Temple was led by freshmen Miray Bolukbasi and Tyler Lindgren. Bolukbasi tallied a match-best 11 kills, while Lindgren racked up a double-double with 13 assists and a team-high 10 digs. 
> Junior Dana Westfield and senior Carla Guennewig each recording six kills with a .300 attack, while Guennewig was the team's top blocker at three.
> Senior Hannah Vandegrift tied for team high honors with 13 assists.
> Senior Mia Heirakuji picked up nine digs, while graduate student Irem Asci had five digs and four kills.

Set One: Tulane 25, Temple 18
> The Owls were hampered by a strong Tulane block that held Temple to a .029 attack in the first.
> Still, the set was close. After Temple took an 11-8 lead, Tulane answered with a run that put them up, 15-13, forcing a timeout.
> Tulane rolled out of the break, going up 20-15.
> Temple scored back-to-back times to make it 20-17, but the Green Wave closed the frame on a 5-1 run.

Set Two: Tulane 25, Temple 17
> Tulane led from start to finish in the second set, hitting a match-high .467, holding the Owls to a .222 attack.
> The Green Wave opened on a 5-1 run and held as much as a five-point lead, before Temple went on a 5-1 run to close it to 13-11.
> Two points was the closest Temple would come, as Tulane responded with a 10-3 surge to go up 23-14.
> The Owls spoiled a few set points down the stretch, but the Green Wave closed it out to go up, 2-0.

Set Three: Tuane 25, Temple 22
> Temple had the edge in the third set, but a late Tulane run gave them the sweep.
> The Owls turned a 7-6 deficit into a 12-8 lead, with hot hitting from Bolukbasi to key a 6-1 surge.
> With Temple leading 16-12, Tulane with on a 10-3 run to turn the tables, taking a 22-19 lead.
> Temple got the deficit down to one, but Tulane closed out the set and match win.

> Temple hits the road for a pair of games next weekend. The Owls will play at Tulsa on Friday and Wichita State on Sunday.
