Volleyball Stalled by High Powered ECU Offense

10.7.18 | Women's Volleyball

PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple volleyball team was unable to contain a hot-hitting East Carolina team, as the visiting Pirates topped Temple, 20-25, 25-18, 25-14, 25-22 on Sunday afternoon at McGonigle Hall. ECU improved to 12-4 overall, 3-1 in conference play with the win, while Temple fell to 4-13, 1-4.

Keys to the Match
> Temple couldn't have asked for a better start, hitting .350 to take the first set.
> East Carolina turned the tables, however, using hot starts in each of the final three sets to erase Temple's early lead.
> The Pirates' high powered offense proved to be the difference, as ECU hit .343 to Temple's .224.
> The Pirates also had slim advantages in digs (59-53) and blocks (5-2).

> Temple hit .350 to ECU's .250 to take an early 1-0 lead.
> The Owls rattled off a 10-3 run to start the set and never looked back.

> However, a Papazoglou kill ended set one in Temple's favor.

Set Two: ECU 25, Temple 18
> The tables turned in set two, as ECU hit .414 to Temple's .129.
> ECU had an early lead it did not relinquish, opening on a 7-4 run and never allowing Temple to gain momentum.
> The Owls cut the lead to two, 10-8 early, but that's the closest they'd get.
> ECU racked up 16 kills to tie the match at 1-1 with a 25-18 win.

Set Three: ECU 25, Temple 14
> The third frame was all ECU, as the Pirates hit a massive .571 combining for 17 kills with only one error.
> Despite ECU's hot hitting, the match stayed close early, as ECU led just 9-7.
> From there, an 8-2 run pushed the advantage to 17-9, taking Temple out of it.
> The Owls got no closer than seven the rest of the way as ECU went up, 2-1.

Set Four: ECU 25, Temple 22
> ECU had control of the fourth set and looked like they'd pull away easily before a late run gave the Owls life.
> The Pirates grabbed the advantage out of the gate and led 19-15 late.
> Temple climbed all the way back to tie the set at 20-20, using a 5-1 surge.
> The teams traded sideouts down the stretch, before ECU closed out the close 25-22 win.
