Men's Basketball Loses Lead at #21/21 Villanova; Falls 69-59

12.5.18 | Men's Basketball

VILLANOVA, Pa. - Going nearly four minutes without a point in a crucial stretch of the second half cost Temple men's basketball its chance for an upset of #21/21 Villanova as the Owls (7-2, 2-1 Big 5) lost 69-59 to the Wildcats (7-2, 2-0 Big 5) at Finneran Pavilion.

Game Summary
> Sophomore Nate Pierre-Louis scored a game and season-high 19 points for Temple and sparked some impressive stretches of play by the Owls, but a second half lead slipped away in the latter part of the period.
> Temple led by as many as seven early in the second half, and still led by four near the six-minute mark before suffering its shooting drought.
> Over the final six minutes, Villanova out-scored the Owls 26-12 which included 15 free throws and a 12-0 Wildcat run.
> Villanova finished 20-of-25 at the line while the Owls were just 9-for-12.
> The Owls' bench had come up big in their last win at Saint Joseph's, but struggled at Villanova and scored just seven points while the Wildcats' bench scored 29.

Individual Highlights
> Pierre-Louis hit 7-of-12 from the field and 5-of-6 from the line on his way to 19 points, also tying for the team lead with five rebounds.
> Senior Shizz Alston, Jr. scored 15 points with three assists while junior Quinton Rose added 13 points and two steals.

First Half
> Tough defense and scoring droughts told the story in the first half after one solid run by each team early on.
> The Owls made the game's first two buckets before going cold during a 10-0 Villanova run, but Pierre-Louis got the Owls back in it, scoring six points in an 8-2 Temple run capped by an Alston steal and dunk.
> With the score tied at 12-12, it stayed close the rest of the period. The Wildcats led by five at 17-12, but Temple cut the margin to three and neither team would lead by more than that in the final eight minutes.
> Temple's only lead in that stretch was a short one at 23-21 and came thanks to an Alston three-pointer with a minute to go. Villanova answered with a trey of its own and the Owls went into the break down a point, 24-23.
> The long range shot by Alston was the only one the Owls made in seven attempts in the opening period, while Villanova went 4-for-11.

Second Half
> Rose made the first bucket of the second half, a three-pointer at 19:16, to give Temple a lead and start a 10-2 run that put the Owls up by seven, 33-26 near the 16-minute mark.
> Villanova had a quick answer with a 7-0 run of its own, leading to the first second-half tie at 33-33 with 13:18 left.
> Pierre-Louis put Temple back in the lead with four straight points, later scoring again to make it a five-point Owls' lead at 9:44.
> The Wildcats erased that lead as well, later using a 12-0 run to turn the game around in their favor.
> Alston broke the almost four-minute Temple scoring drought with a three-pointer at 2:47, but Villanova was strong at the stripe and did not allow Temple to come any closer.
