Volleyball Earns National Recognition for Academic Performance
7.17.18 | Women's Volleyball
PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple volleyball team was recognized nationally for academics on Tuesday, as the Owls were named an American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award winner for the 2017-18 season. The award honors excellence in the classroom by recognizing teams that maintain at least a 3.3 cumulative GPA.
Temple's 2017-18 academic year showed that the Owls excelled both on the court and in the classroom. The team went 20-10 overall, including 15-5 to finish second in the American Athletic Conference. Temple returned to the post-season for the first time in 15 years, advancing to the round of 16 in the National Invitational Volleyball Championship. In the classroom, the Owls put together two semesters with a GPA over 3.4, with 92% of the volleyball student-athletes earning over a 3.0 GPA.
The AVCA award began in 1992-93 and is the single largest award offered by quantity of schools, players and coaches honored. Since the award has been given out over 1,000 schools have earned the distinction and 7,642 awards have been given out in total. A record 973 teams earned the AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2017-2018 season. This number breaks the previous year's total of 835 to set an all-time high.
The Owls open the 2018 season by hosting the Hilton Penn's Landing Temple Invitational. The team will welcome LMU, Hofstra, and Rhode Island to McGonigle Hall.
