Volleyball Wins Season Opener over Rhode Island

PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple volleyball team opened the 2018 season with a 3-1 win over visiting Rhode Island to close out day one of the Hilton Penn's Landing Temple Invitational. The Owls grabbed the win with set scores of 25-15, 19-25, 31-29, and 25-22 to start the year 1-0.
KEYS TO THE MATCH
> Temple won big in the first set, before Rhode Island tied things at 1-1.
> In a marathon third set, the Owls rallied from down 12-6 to win the frame 31-29.
> Temple closed out the win with a close 25-22 win in the fourth.
> Temple hit .218 while holding URI to a .184 attack.
INDIVIDUAL STATS
> Three Temple players reached the 10-kill mark, as the Owls played a deep bench with success.
> Rookie Miray Bolukbasi started her collegiate career with a double-double of 13 kills and 15 digs, while junior Dana Westfield led the Owls with 14 kills.
> Another freshman, Peyton Boyd, shined in her debut, tallying 10 kills, hitting .444.
> Senior Hannah Vandegrift and rookie Tyler Lindgren split setting duties with Vandegrift picking up 27 helpers and Lindgren notching 21.
> Graduate student Irem Asci had five kills and eight digs, with senior Mia Heirakuji finishing with a team-high 20 digs.
> Senior Carla Guennewig rounded out the stats with for kills, four blocks, and four aces.
SET ONE: Temple 25, URI 15
> Temple started strong out of the gate, as a long serving run from Guennewig sparked a 6-0 run to put the Owls up 14-8.
> The home team pushed the advantage to 21-12 on kills from Bolukbasi and Boyd.
> Temple sealed the set with a kill from freshman Gem Grimshaw and a Guennewig ace.
SET TWO: URI 25, Temple 19
> Rhode Island evened things at 1-1 with a strong set two.
> The Rams opened up an 8-3 lead and led by as many as nine late in play.
> Temple made a run towards the end of the frame, but the URI lead held to tie the set.
SET THREE: Temple 31, URI 29
> In a hugely pivotal third frame, it was Temple that came out on the right side of a marathon showing.
> URI had the early advantage, going up 12-6, before Temple mad a run to tie things up at 13-13 on a kill from Asci.
> The Rams did not relinquish the lead, going up 19-16, but the Owls again battled to tie.
> The set was tied nine more times, as both teams spoiled numerous set points.
> In the end, Temple won it on an Asci kill and a URI misplay to go up, 2-1.
SET FOUR: Temple 25, URI 22
> A back-and-forth final set had the Owls go up 10-7 early.
> URI tied it at 14-14 but Temple never trailed the rest of the way, despite several late runs by the Rams.

> The Owls will play two matches tomorrow to close out the tournament.
> Temple plays LMU at 11:00 a.m. and Hofstra at 7:00 p.m.
