Men's Soccer Heads to Virginia for ODU Soccer Classic

PHILADELPHIA – The Temple men's soccer squad faces two more road brawls this weekend as they take on the VCU Rams (1-1) on Friday at 7:00 pm and the Old Dominion Monarchs (1-0-1) Sunday at 6:00 pm in the 43rd annual ODU Classic.
 
NEW YEAR, NEW OWLS
> Brian Rowland heads up the Owls in his first season after spending eight seasons on the University of Maryland's men's soccer staff, with the final three campaigns as the Terps' associate head coach.
> Temple returned 11 players from the 2017 squad that went 9-8-1 and qualified for the American Athletic Conference Tournament. This year the Owls added 17 newcomers, including talented transfers and freshmen to build their 2018 roster.
 
LAST TIME ON THE PITCH
> The Owls opened the 2018 season on the road at UMBC, with a late Retrievers goal sinking the Owls, 1-0.
>The match proved to be a battle on both ends of the field, as UMBC out shot Temple 7-6, but the Owls finished with three saves to UMBC's two.
> Junior goalkeeper Simon Lefebvre had multiple great saves for the Owls, before a 78th-minute goal from the Retrievers.
>The Owls started seven players that are new to the Temple roster this season, and 18 total players saw action in the game.
 
SCOUTING VCU
> VCU kicked off their 2018 season ranked second in the 2018 A-10 Preseason Poll. The Rams received four first place votes and earned 149 points, only 10 behind first-ranked Fordham.  
> The Rams fell 0-2 to Georgia Southern (1-0-1) in their first match of the season to begin a four game home stint. They bounced back two days later as they defeated Radford 3-0, each goal coming from a different player.
> Three Rams are tied at the top of the scorebook as Josep Gonnella, Jared Greene and Eli Lockaby have each tallied one goal for VCU this season.
> Mario Sequeira has logged the most time in net for the Rams, racking up five saves during his 135 minutes played.
 
LAST TIME VS. VCU
> The Owls will hunt for their first-ever win over VCU as they enter the series 0-1-0. The two teams are facing for the first time since 2012, when VCU slid past the Owls in a 1-0 win at home.
 
SCOUTING ODU
> The Monarchs look to keep their unbeaten streak alive after a 2-2 tie against Georgia Southern and a 1-0 win over Radford to start their 2018 season.
> ODU enters the weekend ranked No. 25 in the nation by the United Soccer Coaches Poll, providing Temple with the opportunity to face their first ranked opponent of the year.
> Max Wilschrey has tallied every goal for the Monarchs so far this season, leading the team in goals (3), points (6), shots (8) and game winning goals (1).
> Mertcan Akar has tabbed all 200 minutes in net for ODU, entering the weekend with seven saves and a goals against average of .90.
 
LAST TIME VS. ODU
> The Owls and Monarchs will meet head to head for the first time since 2009 when Temple fell to ODU 0-4.  The Owls will look for their first ever win over the Monarchs as they enter the series 0-2.
 
ODU CLASSIC: THREE EAST AND A WEST
> This year marks the 43rd ODU Soccer classic hosted by the Monarchs. The fourth team participating in the weekend will be West Coast opponent Santa Clara, who enters the weekend 1-1.
 
FAMILIAR FOES
> VCU and Old Dominion have faced identical opponents so far this season as they both took on Radford and Georgia Southern last weekend. VCU ended the weekend 1-1 after defeating Radford 3-0 but later fell to Georgia Southern 0-2. ODU left the weekend without a loss as they defeated Radford 1-1 and tied Georgia Southern 2-2 after two full overtimes.
