Football Bounces Back with a Dominating Win at Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Temple Football bounced back in a big way Saturday with an impressive 35-14 win over previously unbeaten Maryland, 35-14. The Owls dominated the game on both sides of the ball on their way to a huge road win against the Big Ten school. Temple finished with 80-plays for 429 yards compared to Maryland's 52-plays for 195 yards.
How it Happened?
> QB Anthony Russo started the game for Temple as QB Frank Nutile was held out due to injury. QB Todd Centeio also rotated in throughout the game.
>The Owls struck first on a 4th-and-8 from Maryland's 34-yard line. Centeio took the direct snap on a fake punt and rolled right looking to throw. WR Freddie Johnson caught the pass down the Temple sideline and scampered into the endzone untouched. It was Centeio's first career touchdown throw and Johnson's first career touchdown catch. The quarter would end 7-0 Temple.
>Also in the first quarter, Michael Dogbe recorded 1.5 sacks, Zack Mesday had one sack, and Jimmy Hogan had a half sack.
>On a 3rd-and-16 from the Temple 43 yard-line, Russo completed a 40-yard pass to WR Brodrick Yancy to keep the drive alive. This led to a one-yard touchdown on a dive play by DT Freddie Booth-Lloyd. Booth-Lloyd doesn't play offense often, but he has seen action in goal line situations throughout practice. With 6:38 to go in the half, Temple led 14-0.
>With 3:23 left in the half, Maryland's Darnell Savage picked off Russo and returned it for a touchdown to make the score 14-7.
>Temple answered quickly with a long drive and a touchdown. The 11-play 65-yard drive was capped off by a 2-yard touchdown by FB Rob Ritrovato. The Owls scored with seven seconds left in the half and took a 21-7 lead into halftime.
>To start the second half, Temple marched down the field and scored on a 47-yard catch and run by TE Kenny Yeboah from Russo. It was his first career touchdown catch and Russo's first career touchdown throw. Just three minutes into the second half, the Owls led 28-7.
>The Owls continued to shut down the Terrapins on both sides of the ball. Headed into the fourth quarter Temple had run 67 plays for 387 yards compared to Maryland's 34 plays for 109 yards. Dogbe forced another fumble and eventually the Terrapins would turn the ball over on downs with 11:54 left in the 4th quarter.
> Maryland blocked a Connor Bowler punt and returned it 27-yards for a touchdown to cut the Owls lead to 28-14 with 8:21 to play.
> Maryland got the ball back and was eyeing another shot at the endzone on Temple's 22-yard line. LB Shaun Bradley ended the Terps threat with a 78-yard pick-six to seal the victory.
>Owls CB Linwood Crump came up with another TU interception to close out the contest.
Notes
>Temple dominated time of possession by more than 10 minutes. Temple amassed 36:33 compared to 23:27 for Maryland.
>Temple's stingy defense only allowed the Terrapins to convert 1-of-12 third down conversions, forcing Maryland to punt eight times.
>The Owls also dominated the turnover game with two interceptions and two forced fumbles compared to Maryland's none.
>Russo went 15-25 passing and threw for 228 yards. His longest pass was to Yeboah for a 47-yard touchdown.
>RB Ryquell Armstead rushed for 118 yards on 26 carries. His longest was a 25 yard run. This was his second straight 100+ yard game this season.
> WR Ventell Bryant led the team in catches with five for 45 yards.
