Volleyball Sweeps Day Two of Cherry & White Challenge

9.15.18 | Women's Volleyball

PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple volleyball team finished its own Cherry & White Challenge with a day two sweep, as the Owls topped Princeton (3-1) and UNH (3-1). The tournament marked the end of the non-conference season for Temple who went 3-9 against non-league opponents.

Temple vs. Princeton
> Temple and Princeton split the first two sets before the Tigers opened a large and late third-set lead.
> A stunning comeback in the third set saw Temple turn a 19-12 deficit into a 25-23 win, taking over momentum in the match.
> The fourth set was all Temple, as the Owls finished out the win.

Temple vs. Princeton Individual Highlights
> Junior Dana Westfield was spectacular, recording a match-best 18 kills.
> Sophomore Katerina Papazoglou finished with 11 kills and 14 digs for a double-double.
> Freshman Gem Grimshaw tallied nine kills and five blocks, and senior Iva Deak added eight kills, three blocks.
> Sophomore Baleigh Jean-Philippe, an All-Tournament selection, finished with seven kills and seven blocks.
> Freshman Tyler Lindgren dished out 27 assists with senior Hannah Vandegrift adding 22.
> Temple's back line was stout, anchored by an incredible performance from senior Mia Heirakuji who recorded a career-high 32 digs.
> Sophomore Averi Salvador added 15 digs, while senior Irem Asci picked up 13.

Set One: Princeton 25, Temple 18
> Set one was tied nine times in the early part, settling at 12-12.
> Princeton broke the deadlock with a 6-2 surge to take an 18-14 advantage.
> Temple rallied to cut it to three on a kill from Deak, but Princeton closed the frame 25-18.

Set Two: Temple 26, Princeton 24
> Princeton led early in the second set, taking an 8-3 advantage.
> Temple stayed in the match, finally pulling even with Princeton as an Asci ace tied it at 19-19.
> From there, the lead changed hand five more times, before Temple ended it in extra points, 26-24.

Set Three: Temple 25, Princeton 22
> Princeton got off to a hot start, going up 7-3 out of the gate.
> Temple cut it to 8-5 on a Deak kill, but the Tigers kept rolling, leading by seven much of the way.
> With Temple facing a 19-12 deficit, the Owls began their comeback.
> Princeton's lead shrunk to three (20-17) on an attack error, but they pushed it back to 22-18.
> Temple's block came alive to spark a 5-1 run that tied the set at 23-23.
> The Owls then got an Asci kill and a Heirakuji ace to steal the set, 25-23.

Set Four: Temple 25, Princeton 17
> The momentum shift from the third set carried over into the fourth, as the Owls rolled, hitting a match-high .308, holding Princeton to a match-low .025.
> Temple turned a 7-6 edge into a dominating 15-8 lead, going on an 8-2 run.
> Princeton got no closer than five the rest of the way, as Temple won 25-17 to grab its second-straight match victory.

Temple vs. UNH
> The Owls held visting UNH to a .028 attack, combining for 15 blocks, just one shy of a season high.
> Temple lost a close set one, but rebounded for three-straight set wins to take the match.
> The Owls hit .178, out-digging the Wildcats, 81-72.

Temple vs. UNH Individual Highlights
> Deak led all players with 13 kills, while adding seven blocks.
> Westfield tallied 10 kills with four blocks.
> Jean-Philippe had a career day with seven kills without an error and seven blocks.
> Asci had six kills and 12 digs, while Grimshaw added five kills.
> Lindgren and Vandegrift split the setting duties, with each dishing out 22 assists.
> Heirakuji had a match-best 22 digs, while Salvador (17) and Papazoglou (12) rounded out the defense.  

Set One: UNH 25, Temple 22
> A late rally fell short for the Owls as the team trailed 1-0 after one.
> Temple rallied from a 6-3 early deficit with a 4-0 surge that put them on top for the first time in the set.
> UNH responded with an 8-2 surge, going back up by five, 14-9.
> Temple kept itself within striking distance and using a 6-1 run, tied the match at 22-22.
> UNH got the next point, but Temple appeared to tie it at 23-23 but a net violation put UNH up 24-22 and the Wildcats got a block on the next ball to win it.

Set Two: Temple 25, UNH 17
> The Owls took control of the set early on, though UNH kept it close.
> Trailing 8-5, UNH rallied to tie things at 10-10, but that was the last tie of the match.
> Temple got some hard swings from Deak to go up 19-14, with UNH cutting it to 22-17.
> The Owls then finished out the set with blocks from Deak, Westfield, and Jean-Philippe to tie the set at 1-1.

Set Three: Temple 25, UNH 16
> Temple had the momentum into the third set, taking a 10-4 lead on a kill from Deak.
> UNH countered with a small surge to cut it to 13-9, but the Owls used a 5-2 run to open their largest lead of the set at 18-11.
> The Wildcats called timeout to halt Temple's run, but the Owls continued to score, pushing it to 21-12.
> The Owls closed out the frame on an Asci kill (25-16), going up 2-1 in the match.

Set Four: Temple 25, UNH 22
> UNH opened with a 5-1 run to start the fourth set, but the Owls quickly tied it at 7-7.
> The Wildcats again pushed ahead, 13-10, but again Temple responded. The Owls went on a 6-1 run to go up 16-14 on a Westfield winner.
> UNH then rattled off a 6-1 run to go up 20-17.
> From there, Temple took over, the Owls went on an 8-2 run to win the set 25-22, and the match, 3-1. 

Up Next
> Temple will open the American Athletic Conference season next weekend.
> The Owls go on the road to play at Houston on Friday and SMU on Sunday.
