Women's Cross Country Heads to Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational
9.26.18 | Women's Cross Country
PHILADELPHIA – The Temple University women's cross country team heads to South Bend, Ind. this Friday, Sept. 28th to compete in one of their most reputable meets of the season, the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational. Eight Owls will make the trip to compete against stiff competition that includes five nationally ranked programs, moving up to the prestigious Blue Division of the invitational for the first time in program history.
About the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational
> The 63rd annual Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational will consist of 39 teams, including 37 women's teams and 31 men's. There will be six races throughout the day, with the women facing a 5,000 meter course and the men running five miles.
> The Owls will compete in the first race of the meet, kicking off the Blue Division at 1:00 p.m. sharp. The Cherry and White earned the advancement to the top division after a second place finish in the Gold Division last year, finishing just behind Northern Iowa.
> The field this year boasts 17 regionally ranked women's teams competing, including the Owls who remain steady at the No. 9 spot in the Mid-Atlantic.
> There are five nationally ranked women's teams competing at the Joe Piane Invitational, including No. 11 BYU, No. 13 Furman, No. 21 California, No. 23 Notre Dame, and a Florida State squad that has received votes in the latest USTFCCCA poll.
From the Coach
> "Getting the opportunity to compete in the Blue Division at the Joe Piane Invitational will give us a great indication of where we are as a program, especially when competing against such high caliber competition," said head coach James Snyder. "It's a great chance to race in a deeply competitive field, where the difference of 5-10 seconds could shift a team 10-20 places. It's the biggest field we have raced it up to this point in the season, and will be a critical test for our runners to see what they can do."
> Snyder discussed the layout of Burke Golf Course, the field in which the women will be competing, and how he predicts the squad will perform under the given conditions. "This course is flat and fast, which suits the way our women are wired really well. I think a fast course fits a middle distance background, and we have a large contingent of women that fall into that category. They also step down to the 5000 meter distance from the longer races they have faced so far this season, which should really have a positive impact on overall performances."
Last Time Out
> The women's cross country squad will head to Notre Dame coming off of an impressive performance at the Army West Point Open two weeks ago. The Owls captured their second straight win of the 2018 season, dominating the challenging 5,600-meter Bowdoin Park course and sweeping the top three spots at the competition.
> Eight Owls will compete at the Joe Piane Invitational on Friday that have performed well for Temple so far this season. Traveling to race at Notre Dame will be Grace Moore, Lucy Jones, Kira Van Ehren, Helene Gottlieb, Michelle Joyce, Millie Howard, Katie Leisher and Ashton Dunkley.
> Moore, a returning All-East performer for the Owls, made a statement last meet at her first race back in uniform for the 2018 season. She won the 5,600-meter race by nearly 18 seconds with a time of 19:21.2, leading the Owls' front pack that earned the top three finishes.
> Jones crossed the line next for the Owls, earning second overall with a time of 19:43.6. Finishing right by her side was Van Ehren, who completed the race third with a time of 19:44.8.
> Gottlieb and Joyce took a different approach in today's race, starting out more conservatively but building as the race progressed. This tactic proved to work well for the pair of Temple sophomores, as they took sixth and eighth place, recording times of 20:17.4 and 20:21.2, respectively.
