Women's Cross Country Finishes 14th at Joe Piane Invitational

9.28.18 | Women's Cross Country

SOUTH BEND, IND. – After winning their first two meets of the season, the Temple University women's cross country squad competed at the reputable Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational on Friday afternoon. The Owls raced in the Blue Division of the meet for the first time in program history, facing five nationally ranked women's teams along with multiple regionally ranked contenders.

Team Results
> The contingent of nationally recognized competition was No. 11 BYU, No. 13 Furman, No. 21 California, No. 23 Notre Dame and a Florida State team that has received votes in the latest USTCCCA poll.  BYU, Furman, Notre Dame and Florida State swept the top four team places, followed by Duke, Northwestern, Iowa, Eastern Michigan, Miami (Ohio) and Clemson to round out the top 10.
> Temple compiled a total of 319 points, earning them a 14th place finish overall. The other teams they faced in the Blue Division were Dayton, California, LSU, Central Michigan, Baylor and Oklahoma.

From the Coach
> "Overall, this was a very disappointing day on the ladies side," said head coach James Snyder. "I think that finishing 14th as a team was not something we planned to do, and we had much higher expectations across the board of what the performances would be. We leave here having learned a few lessons, and hopefully it is an opportunity for us to realize some of the things that we need to do as a team to be able to take another step forward as a program."

Race Notes
> The top finisher from Temple was junior Kira Van Ehren, who crossed the finish line 34th with a time of 17:34.7. Van Ehren's performance highlighted the squad today in her second race wearing a Cherry and White uniform.
> The next finisher for the Owls was sophomore Lucy Jones, who posted a time of 17:42.9,
> Wrapping up the top three for Temple was sophomore Helene Gottlieb, who posted a time of 18:02.2 and closed out the race strong.
