Women’s Soccer Drops 2-0 Decision at Lehigh
9.7.18 | Women's Soccer
Bethlehem, Pa. - Temple (3-3) battled the elements and a tough Lehigh (3-3) team in Bethlehem, but ultimately fell to the Mountain Hawks 2-0.
Keys to the Match
> Defender Kat McCoy and goalkeeper Morgan Basileo combined for a key defensive play in the 34th minute. Lehigh forward Rebecca Van Siclen took a shot from just outside the box and it was deflected by Basileo. McCoy fended off a cutting Maggie Wadsworth to thwart a clear path to the goal.
> After a scoreless first half, Lehigh scored two goals within three minutes of each other. Van Siclen struck in the 53rd minute and forward Courtney Supp in the 56th. Basileo got a piece of Supp's shot, but the weather conditions played a factor as the slick ball slipped through her gloves.
> Aisha Brown recorded a team save to prevent a Lehigh goal in the 71st minute. Brown dispelled a sure score just before the goal line after Basileo came off her line to contest the shot.
Match Notes
> The best look of the first half for the Owls came in the 2nd minute. Jules Blank got a step on her defender and broke away, but her chip was just wide of the target.
> A strong effort by the back line and Basileo kept the Mountain Hawks scoreless in the first half. Basileo recorded seven saves through the first 45 minutes, notching eight on the game. She redirected soaring shots from the Mountain Hawks on two separate occasions by extending and just tipping them over the cross bar.
> Temple's defense held a solid line as they pushed Lehigh offside a dozen times.
Quotable
> The Owls battled well on the road, going into half time with a 0-0 score. "It was a story of missed chances," said head coach Seamus O'Connor. "In the first 10 minutes we should've been up 2-0.... The first 10 minutes are an issue right now. Two games in a row we've created beautiful chances in the first 10 to 15 minutes, which at our level we need to put away."
> Temple drew Lehigh offside a season-high 12 times. "[The backline] is a very disciplined group," said O'Connor. "They hold a nice high line and are very well organized. They are a strength of ours this year. We're very happy with their discipline and ability to hold that line."
