Women's Soccer Drops 1-0 Heartbreaker to SMU

10.10.19 | Women's Soccer

PHILADELPHIA – The Temple Women's soccer team (3-8-3, 1-4 AAC) dropped a Thursday night heart breaker at the Temple Sports Complex, falling to RV SMU (8-3-1, 1-2), 1-0. A converted penalty kick in the 77th minute of game action was the decider in the physical American Athletic Conference battle.

How it Happened
> SMU came out firing on all cylnders against the Owls. The Mustangs got their first of 14 corner kicks in the fourth minute of action and maintained possession in the Owls defensive third for the better of the first 30 minutes of play.
> The Owls gained momentum in the 30th minute and were able to generate a threatening chance for their first shot of the game. Junior Djavon Dupree collected the ball towards the left of the 18 yard box and fired off a driven shot that landed just right of frame. In the first 45 minutes of play, the Mustangs outshot the Owls 9-2 and had a 7-0 edge in corner kicks.
> It was a game of two halves as the Temple offense came out of the locker room fired up. In just the 50th minute, sophomore Gabriela Johnson rocketed a powerful shot on frame but was denied by SMU's goalkeeper, Tatum Sutherland.
> Three minutes later, Temple goalkeeper Morgan Basileo came up huge for the Owls to keep the Mustangs off the board. The senior thwarted a huge chance for the Mustangs when Allie Thornton ripped a shot on frame and she leaped up to tip the ball over the crossbar. Basileo made two more massive saves over the next minute and a half and kept the score notched at zero.
> In the 67th minute, Hailey Gutowski nearly gave the Owls the lead with a powerful shot from inside the goal box. The sophomore sent the ball around Sutherland but hit it just right of the post.
> SMU notched the game-winner in the 77th minute of play when Thornton converted a penalty kick. The goal was the senior's team-leading 10th of the season.

Game Notes
> The back line and Basileo came up huge for the Owls throughout the contest. They held strong against a powerful SMU offensive unit that recorded 22 shots, seven on goal.
> Basileo tallied six saves for the Cherry and White against the Mustangs. This brings her season total up to 97.

From the Coach
> "This was a heartbreaker against a very good SMU team," said head coach Seamus O'Connor. "We knew we would have our hands full and we left everything out on the field. Our players did tremendously well and worked themselves into the ground. I'm extremely proud of them and wish they could have gotten the result they deserved."
