Fencing to Open 2019-20 Campaign at Home

11.1.19 | Women's Fencing

PHILADELPHIA - The Temple fencing program is set to begin its 2019-20 campaign on Broad Street, hosting the 40th Annual Temple Open from Nov. 2-3. All women's competition will take place on Saturday, while the men's competition will take place on Sunday.

For the 40th year in a row, the Owls will host the Temple Open in the Liacouras Center. Nearly 500 fencers from nearly 30 schools will compete at the event, and it is the largest collegiate fencing competition in the nation.

"The team has been working very hard to prepare for our first tournament," head coach Dr. Nikki Franke said. "For many of the girls, this will be their first collegiate tournament so it's very exciting. This competition will be a good test to see where we are as we begin our new season."

The women's events will begin Saturday at 8:30 a.m. and will conclude at 6 p.m. The men's events will follow the same schedule and will take place the following day.

Last year's team had a solid performance, with four fencers placing in the top eight and eight fencers finishing in the top 12. Senior Malia Hee led the Owls, earning a second-place finish in sabre and just barely getting edged by a score of 15-13 in the final. Hee's finish was the top overall finish for Temple.

Senior Kennedy Lovelace led the foil sqaud, placing sixth for the second-straight year. Senior Camille Simmons earned the team's second-highest finish in epee, taking 13th behind former Owl Ally Micek.

The Temple Open is one of just two chances Owl fans have to see their team on campus. In late February, the Temple Invitational in McGonigle Hall will close out the regular season for Temple.
