PHILADELPHIA – Temple's Daniel Archibong, Matt Hennessy, and Will Mobley have been named Philadelphia Inquirer Football Academic All-Area in voting by the sports information offices of 30 institutions in the Philadelphia metropolitan area. Twenty-four players earned honors and Archibong was one of three repeat performers from a year ago.
Redshirt junior Daniel Archibong is a two-time member of the Academic All-Area team. The Springfield, Pa., native holds a 3.52 GPA in adult and organizational development and will graduate next week. Archibong is one of the key players for Temple's defensive front four that is rated among the best in the American Athletic Conference. The three-year letterwinner notched a career-best 23 tackles with 1.5 sacks. Many credit him with helping three teammates earn first-team all-conference honors as he eats up blocker so they can post big numbers.
Redshirt junior Matt Hennessy makes the list for the first time but has earned numerous athletic and academic accolades in his career. A year ago the Bardonia, N.Y., native was named the AAC Male Scholar Athlete of the Year and he was recently named first team All-AAC and a finalist for the Rimington Trophy, given to the nation's best center. He capped off his season as the highest graded center (87.0) in the FBS, according to Pro Football Focus. He allowed just four quarterback pressures and no sacks on 826 total snaps this season. With his leadership, the line helped true freshman RB Re'Mahn Davis to a team-leading 900 rushing yards. Hennessy has earned his degree in finance.
Redshirt sophomore kicker Will Mobley has scored well both on the field and in the classroom. The Lititz, Pa., native holds a 3.82 GPA in marketing and has annually earned All-AAC and President's Honor Roll. He was the Owls' leading scorer in 2019 with 71 points making 37-of-39 PATs and 11-of-13 field goals. Mobley earned national and conference honors when the Owls beat then #23 Memphis, 30-28, giving the Cotton Bowl-bound Tigers their only loss of the season.
Temple led the way with 11 nominations from the nine different schools that were represented on the Academic All-Area Team ballot. Nominees must earn a GPA of at least 3.0 and contribute significantly to the team on the field. The other Owls considered were: WR Jadan Blue, OL Jovahn Fair, LB Isaiah Graham-Mobley, OL Adam Klein, DT Ifeanyi Maijeh, LS Travis Malinowski, DE Zack Mesday, and OL Vincent Picozzi.
