Temple Leads AAC in Academic Performance Program Public Recognition

5.1.19 | General

PHILADELPHIA - For the third straight year, seven Temple University athletic programs have been announced as recipients of the NCAA's Division I Academic Performance Program (APP) Public Recognition, honoring the top 10 percent of Division I teams across the nation for their multi-year academic performance. Temple also leads all American Athletic Conference schools APP Public Recognition.

"To have seven teams recognized nationally for a third year in a row is truly an amazing accomplishment,"said Temple's Director of Athletics Dr. Patrick Kraft. "I am so proud of the way our teams continue to excel academically and provide Temple a reputation of success at both the conference and national level. I credit the hard work put in not only by our student-athletes, but also by our outstanding academic support staff led by Justin Miller, and our coaches, who make it a priority to instill the true meaning of student-athlete with their teams."

Men's tennis is being recognized for a sixth year in a row, while men's cross country and women's tennis made the list for a fourth straight year. Men's basketball, women's cross country and women's soccer were all honored by the NCAA for a third consecutive year. Women's volleyball rounds out the Owls' seven honored programs with its first public recognition.

Among AAC schools, no other had more than five conference programs recognized (UConn's six includes one Big East programs). Among all full Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) institutions, Temple's seven honorees are tied for 14th - and first in the state of Pennsylvania.

The Academic Performance Program (APP) is designed to ensure Division I student-athletes receive exemplary educational and intercollegiate-athletics experiences.  The APP encourages student-athlete graduation through a reward and penalty system directly tied to a team's academic performance. The APP umbrella covers both the Academic Progress Rate (APR) and Graduation Success Rate (GSR).
