Volleyball Wins UMBC Invitational; Sweeps the Host Retrievers

8.31.19 | Women's Volleyball

CATONSVILLE, Md. — Temple volleyball continued its winning ways on Saturday, closing the 2019 UMBC Invitational with its third sweep in as many matches. The Owls topped the host Retrievers, 3-0 (25-17, 25-14, 25-16) to win the tournament. Temple improves to 3-0 to start the season for the first time since 2014.

> "I thought our serving was very good today, and our serve-receive has been good all weekend. We passed at a very high percentage."
> "UMBC was a tricky match. They can get very very hot. But today, we stayed focused and we didn't allow them to go on many runs."
> "This tournament was huge for our confidence. It's very motivating to see your hard work pay off. We have some very tough matches coming up, so we just want to try to get better each one."

Individual Leaders
> Sophomore Gem Grimshaw led the way offensively, racking up 13 kills, adding seven digs and three blocks.
> Junior Katerina Papazoglou added seven kills and 11 digs, while sophomore Peyton Boyd had six kills and two blocks.
> Sophomore Tyler Lindgren dished out 28 assists with five digs.
> Junior Averi Salvador rounded out the stats with 11 digs.

UMBC All-Tournament
> Grimshaw and Salvador were each named to the UMBC Invitational All-Tournament Team following the event.
> Grimshaw led Temple's offense with 3.78 kills per set, hitting .367, while adding 10 total blocks and seven aces in three matches.
> Salvador was the Owls' top defensive player, racking up 5.78 digs per set with four aces.

Set One: Temple 25, UMBC 17
> UMBC scored the first two points of the set, but the Owls quickly regrouped and did not trail after that.
> Temple hit .393 in the frame, holding the Retrievers to a .074 attack.
> The Owls quickly built up an eight-point lead, not allowing UMBC to get within five the rest of the way.

Set Two: Temple 25, UMBC 14
> Another solid hitting performance allowed the Owls to cruise to a second set win. 
> Temple scored the first four points of the set, and quickly built their lead to 10-3. 
> The Owls' advantage grew to 20-10 and Temple won it on a Boyd kill.

Set Three: Temple 25, UMBC 16
> Both teams hit well in the final frame, but Temple's .345 attack sealed the sweep.
> After falling behind, 4-2, the Owls tied it at 4-4 and did not relinquish the lead. 
> UMBC closed to within two at 10-8, but Temple's strong serve created separation. 
> Leading 14-12, Temple cruised down the stretch, closing the set and match with an 11-4 run.

Up Next
> Temple continues non-conference play at the American University Invitational next Friday and Saturday.
> The Owls will take on Ohio, Winthrop, and American at the event.
