Women’s Soccer Battles Maryland to 1-1 Draw in College Park

9.12.19 | Women's Soccer

COLLEGE PARK, Md.—Temple women's soccer came from behind and forced overtime in its Thursday night matchup against the Maryland Terrapins, which ultimately ended in a 1-1 draw. Junior Marissa DiGenova netted the equalizer for the Owls off a Hailey Gutowski assist in the 90th minute of play.

How It Happened
> Senior Morgan Basileo opened up the first half with two key saves. In the fourth minute, she punched away a strong look on goal by Maryland. She came up big again in 18th minute, diving toward the left post to push the shot attempt to safety.
> Maryland got on the board first in the 37th minute. Keyera Wynn found the back of the net off an assist from Emily McNesby to put the Terps up, 1-0.
> The best look of the first half for the Owls came in the 45th minute. With less than one minute to play before halftime, junior Djavon Dupree fed senior Morgan Morocco in the box. Morocco got a shot off, but it landed wide right of the frame.
> Junior Arryana Daniels made an outstanding defensive play in the 49th minute. Maryland served a ball into the box and Daniels went up in the air to challenge Sefcik for the 50-50 ball. Daniels maintained her position and drew the foul, regaining possession for the Owls.
> Temple picked up its intensity in the attacking third in the second half, recording nine shots, three on goal, in its relentless pursuit of an equalizer.
> The Owls' efforts earned them the equalizer in the final minute of regulation. Gutowski sparked the attack and found DiGenova in the box. One-on-one with the keeper, DiGenova took one touch and buried the ball in the back of the net to tie up the match, 1-1.
> In overtime, Temple had several quality golden goal opportunities, but the best chance game in the final moments of the second overtime period. DiGenova fired a blazing free kick on goal that bounced off the cross bar and down toward the goal line. Morocco got her head on the ricochet and directed it on frame, but it was collected by the Maryland goalkeeper.

Match Notes
> Basileo tallied double-digit saves for the second time this season. She recorded 10 saves Thursday night against Maryland and on Aug. 22 against Wake Forest.
> The Terps earned 18 corners, but the Owls defense prevented them from piecing together any formidable scoring opportunities.
> DiGenova's equalizer was her first goal in the Cherry and White. On the season she is now tied at the top of Temple's points list (3) with Morocco and Gabriela Johnson, who each also have one goal and one assist.

From the Coach
> "We are extremely proud of the team," said head coach Seamus O'Connor. "A lot of hard work was demanded of them tonight and they were willing to do it. We had much better possession tonight than we had in the past couple games. The defensive group was absolutely phenomenal tonight. Morgan Basileo and back four (Djavon Dupree, Bella Sorrentino, Arryana Daniels, Marissa DiGenova] were just unbelievable. The attack we created from the midfield was fantastic and up top, Gabi, Hailey, Morgan and Emma did a great job creating chance after chance for us."

Up Next
> Temple will hit the road again on Sunday, Sept. 15 to take on the Rider Broncs. Kickoff is slate for 3 p.m. at Ben Cohen Field in Lawrenceville, N.J.
