Volleyball Improves to 9-0 as the Owls Win the Cherry & White Challenge

PHILADELPHIA — The Temple volleyball team ran its program best start to 9-0, as the Owls notched a pair of sweeps to win the 2019 Hilton Philadelphia at Penn's Landing Cherry & White Challenge. Temple opened the day with a 3-0 win over Columbia before sealing the tournament title with a 3-0 victory over Lehigh.
Temple 3, Columbia 0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-22)
> The Owls opened Saturday's action with a sweep over Columbia, out-hitting the Lions, .288 to .181.
> Holding a slim 11-10 lead in the first set, a 6-0 run gave the Owls the momentum. Columbia closed it to 22-18, but three straight Temple points finished the frame.
> Columbia led 14-12 midway through the second stanza before a set-changing service run from junior Katerina Papazoglou made it 18-14 Temple. The Lions got one back, but the Owls rolled on, closing the set with seven unanswered points.
> Columbia started hot in the third frame, pushing out to a 15-11 advantage. Temple tied things at 17-17, before the Lions got a kill to re-take the lead. A 7-2 run put the Owls in the drivers seat, however, as the team closed out the 25-22 set win and 3-0 match sweep.
Individual Leaders
> Sophomore Peyton Boyd was nearly untouchable against Columbia, tying her career high with 14 kills, hitting .667 with no errors, and five blocks.
> Sophomore Gem Grimshaw and freshman Noami Janetzke each tallied seven digs, while sophomore Miray Bolukbasi added six.
> Sophomore Tyler Lindgren dished out 33 assists, while junior Averi Salvador led the Owls with 11 digs.
> Freshman Kayla Spells rounded out the box score with four kills and a team-best six blocks.
Temple 3, Lehigh 0 (25-18, 27-25, 25-19)
> A tight match against Lehigh came down to Temple's offensive fire power, as the Owls hit .270 to the Mountain Hawk's .115.
> Temple took a closer than it needed to be first set, opening up a 23-11 advantage before holding on for the 25-18 win.
> Lehigh appeared to be heading towards a set two win, before some late magic from the Owls kept their sweep streak alive. Tied 17-17, Lehigh surged to a 22-20 lead, before Temple tied the frame at 22 all.
> The Mountain Hawks pushed ahead once again, going up 24-22, before Temple spoiled back-to-back set points knotting it at 24-24. Temple inched ahead, but it was the Mountain Hawks' turn to ruin a set point, with the frame again tied, this time at 25-25.
> Papazoglou broke the tie with a well placed ball for the 26th Owl point, before a Lehigh attack error gave Temple the set and match.
Individual Highlights
> Papazoglou tallied a double-double, with a team-best 10 kills, hitting .345 with no errors, and adding 11 digs.
> Boyd notched eight kills and three blocks, while Spells added six kills and a pair of blocks.
> Grimshaw tallied six kills on 10 swings to round out the offense.
> Lindgren distributed the attack to the tune of 35 assists, adding eight digs.
> Salvador led Temple with 13 digs, while junior Selina Merfol added nine.
Tournament Honors
> Temple's Lindgren was named the Cherry & White Challenge MVP, dishing out 11.33 assists per set in three matches.
> Boyd and Spells earned All-Tournament honors. Boyd averaged 3.22 kills and 1.00 blocks per frame, while Spells led Temple with 1.33 blocks per set during the tournament.
