9.17.19 | Men's Soccer
PHILADELPHIA – The Temple men's soccer team (2-3) dominated the Delaware Blue Hens (1-2-2) in a Tuesday night, 1-0 victory under the lights at the Temple Sports Complex. The Owls fired off a season-high 23 shots with 14 on target and prevented the Blue Hens from taking a single shot in 90 minutes of game action.
How it Happened
> The Owls once again came out strong from the initial whistle, controlling the game and maintaining possession for the entirety of the first half. The squad's second shutout of the season was propelled by the backline of Pierre Cayet, Mickael Borger, Brandon Johnson and Esteban Suarez and the team's defensive efforts all over the pitch.
> The first opportunity for Temple came in just the sixth minute when the squad found the back of the net, but the thought-to-be goal was ultimately called back. Freshman Amir Cohen rocketed a free kick into the goal box to find Cayet, who buried it on goal but was called offsides.
> The Owls saw another great opportunity in the 18th minute, when redshirt sophomore Paul Frendach chipped the ball into the 18 onto the head of sophomore Elias Hellgren Villegas, who hit it just above the crossbar. The squad saw a similar play in the 30th minute when Borger sent a lofted cross towards freshman Aly Camara, who headed it just high.
> Temple came out of the locker room fired up after out-shooting the Blue Hens 8-0 in the first 45 minutes of play. Just four minutes into the second half, the Owls notched the game winner after dominating possession the entire game. Senior Leandros Lillis exchanged a give-and-go with Cohen in the attacking third and fed the ball through to Lukas Fernandes. The senior captain then struck a low-driven ball to the left corner of net that ricocheted off the post and found Cohen, who buried it for his first goal in Cherry and White.
> The remainder of play saw countless opportunities for the Owls on goal, but Delaware's keeper notched 13 saves to keep the score within one.
Game Notes
> Freshman Lior Nesher played his first match in Cherry and White and made an immediate impact, firing off three shots with two on frame.
> For the second straight week, Fernandes led the squad in shots with five, all of which he put on goal. Freshman Sean Karani trailed his captain by just one, taking four shots with two on net. Overall, the Owls posted a season-high 23 shots with 14 on goal.
> Cohen's goal makes him the third to score for the Owls this season, and his three total points put him second in the scorebook behind Fernandes.
From the Coach
> "We've really held strong to what we've been doing, and I'm happy with our overall performance," said head coach Brian Rowland. "We were good in the games earlier in the year, and I think we've continued to be good in the last couple of games as well. I don't think we've changed much but we're playing with a bit more intensity and urgency which is important. I'm happy we've been able to put two wins together now to build some momentum, but there are plenty of lessons to be learned through these games and we will build off of them to get better as a whole."
