Temple Athletics to Provide Headspace App to Student-Athletes

9.23.19 | General

PHILADELPHIA –Temple University Athletics takes great pride in providing the finest physical and mental health care to its 19 varsity athletics teams. In keeping with that mission, the department will make available the Headspace app to its 500-plus student-athletes and coaches.

The Headspace app, which has over 50 million users in more than 190 countries, helps lower feelings of stress, anxiety, pain, burnout, depression, and irritability, while also raising feelings of focus, resilience, happiness, and better decision making.

"We strive to be among the national leaders in mental health support for our student-athletes and the introduction of Headspace is another step in that direction," said Director of Athletics Dr. Patrick Kraft.  "It was an easy decision for me when Dr. Stephany Coakley approached me about the app and we will continue to seek out innovative ways to support the well-being of our students."

"We are constantly exploring ways to help our student-athletes improve their overall mental health and well-being," said Coakley, the department's Senior Associate Athletics Director for Mental Health.  "The Headspace App has helped countless people since its launch, and it will provide our student-athletes with an easily accessible resource that they can use throughout their day, when they experience stress, anxiety, decreased motivation, lack of focus, and other symptoms that affect mental health.

Headspace also gives our student-athletes a way to sharpen the mental side of their games, while creating healthier habits that will positively impact their academic, athletic and social lives."

With over 1200 hours of content spread over 60 topics, Headspace has something to offer every student-athlete. Besides helping to improve mental health, it also enables the individual to be more focused, confident, composed, calm, and motivated.

"The athletic department offering a full-subscription service of Head Space for all of its student-athletes is extremely important to me," said Temple senior field hockey player and Student-Athlete Advisory Committee President Lucy Reed. "It shows that our department is not just saying student-athlete well-being is a top priority, they are truly putting it at the forefront. The American Athletic Conference has pushed the #Pow6rfulMinds initiative the past few years, and I feel extremely lucky to be at an institution that is fully embracing ending the stigma around mental health. Dr. Kraft and Dr. Coakley have been influential in making sure all student-athletes know that it is okay to not be okay, and this is another step in the right direction for improving the student-athlete experience head-on."
