Volleyball Honored for Academic Achievement

PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple volleyball team was honored by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) this week, earning the US Marine Corps/AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2019-20 school year. The award honors excellence in the classroom by recognizing teams that maintain at least a 3.3 cumulative GPA.

While a record 1,313 teams between women's and men's high school and college volleyball earned this distinction, Temple earned special mention with an AVCA Team Academic Honor Roll nod. The Owls' 3.65 cumulative team GPA ranked in the top 46 of all of NCAA Division I women's teams this year.

"It's a tremendous honor to receive this award, it really shows how dedicated our students are to being true student-athletes," said Head Coach Bakeer Ganesharatnam. "This is also a testament to how dedicated our university, department, and support staff are to providing our student-athletes with the tools they need to succeed in the classroom. Special thanks goes to the Resnick Center and our academic advisor Nick Plack, for being with our team every step of the way. We are very proud of this achievement and the hard work and dedication that went into it."

With this year's honor, Temple now has a streak of eight-straight AVCA Team Academic Awards, all coming under Ganesharatnam.
