Owls in the NFL - Week 7

10.26.21 | Football

Week 7 in the NFL proved to be anticlimactic for the Owls in the NFL.

Four former Owls - the Buffalo Bills [Dion Dawkins (2013-16) and Tyler Matakevich (2012-15)], Jacksonville Jaguars [Chapelle Russell (2015-19)], and Minnesota Vikings [Harrison Hand (2019)] - all were inactive with bye weeks. Rock Ya-Sin (2018) was also inactive while his Indianapolis Colts won at San Francisco on Sunday Night Football.

Matt Rhule (2013-16) and his Carolina Panthers traveled north to take on the Giants. All seven of his former Owls saw action but the Panthers succumbed, 25-3. The defense played okay with the help of former Temple stars Sean Chandler (2014-17), Haason Reddick (2012-16), and Sam Franklin (2016-19). Chandler led the way with 8 tackles, while Reddick (5 tackles, TFL) and Franklin (2 tackles, TFL, on just three defensive snaps) tried to keep the Panthers in the game.  P.J. Walker (2013-16) and Keith Kirkwood (2014-17) tried to ignite the offense. Each saw their first substantial action of the year, while Robby Anderson (2011-13, 2015) and Colin Thompson (2014-16) also saw action. Kirkwood was 3-16 receiving and Anderson was 3-14, while Walker added 46 yards of offense.

Quincy Roche (2016-19) benefited from the Panthers misery as he helped the Giants with three tackles including one TFL.

Despite the way the current Owls played in Raymond James Stadium on Saturday, the surroundings were kind to Bruce Arians and his band of former Owls now on the Buccaneers staff. Tampa Bay whipped up the Bears, 38-3, establishing themselves as one of the teams to beat as they try to march to a second straight Super Bowl.

In a battle of former Temple #9s, Michael Dogbe (2014-18) and his Arizona Cardinals bested Jacob Martin (2014-17) and his Houston Texans, 31-5. Dogbe (3 tackles, one QB hurry) and his Cardinals remain the only undefeated NFL team. Martin contributed four tackles (one TFL).

Another #9, Washington Football Team's Matt Ioannidis (2012-15), recorded two tackles in a loss to Green Bay.

Around the league, Atlanta center Matt Hennessy (2016-19) played every snap for the fifth straight game as his Falcons won, 30-28, at Miami; Baltimore's Tavon Young (2012-15) had two tackles and a pass defensed in a loss to Cincinnati; Philadelphia's Shaun Bradley (2016-19) saw special teams action in a loss at Las Vegas; and Brandon McManus (2009-12) and Nate Hairston (2012-16) and the Broncos set the tone for the week on Thursday Night Football when Denver was unable to set McManus up for a chance to tie in a 17-14 loss at Cleveland.
