Women’s Soccer Drops to No. 23 South Florida in Season Finale

10.28.21 | Women's Soccer

PHILADELPHIA – Temple women's soccer (5-8-3, 2-6-0 AAC) dropped to top-seeded South Florida (11-3-2, 6-1-1 AAC), 2-0 on Thursday night at the Temple Sports Complex.  The Owls remained persistent in their offensive pursuit, but it was not enough to combat the Bulls 2-0 finish.

How it Happened
  • Despite a dominant defensive effort out of the gate from the Owls, the Bulls drew a foul inside the box to earn a penalty kick. Rosalia Muino Gonzalez capitalized on the opportunity, giving South Florida the go-ahead goal 18 minutes into play.
  • Just two minutes later, Emily Kavanaugh found herself at the top of the box, firing a promising shot towards net. Goalkeeper Sydney Martinez leaped for the ball, but it sailed just over the crossbar.
  • The Cherry and White broke through again on a fast break from Hailey Gutowski. The standout forward snuck through the backline, finding herself one-on-one with Martinez. Gutowski took a touch on ball, but Martinez came out to make the diving deflection to help the Bulls hold on to the advantage.
  • A back-and-forth battle for the remainder of the half left the match at 1-0, as neither team could break through.
  • By the 69th minute, Gutowski acted a spark for the Owl offense yet again, sending a quality service into streaking Carly Steinberg. Steinberg sent a grounder towards net, but it resulted in the South Florida save.
  • USF continued to look for the strike, finding a close-range shot in the 69th minute. Junior goalkeeper Kamryn Stablein did not hesitate, making the diving stop to keep the game within reach.
  • As time ticked down, the Bulls did not let up, finding their second goal of the game off a 78th minute Megan Cavanaugh finish.
  • The Owls fought tirelessly for the remainder of the match but could not find their edge to close in on the lead.
Game Notes
  • Sophomore Eliza David made her first start of the season, clocking a full 90 minutes to total 278 on the year.
  • Stablein closed out the season with 98 saves, totaling 158 in just two seasons as an Owl.
  • Veteran defender Marissa DiGenova played in her 77th career game, tied for the third most games played in Temple women's soccer history.

From the Coach
"We can't wait to have a large core of this group back as we move forward," Nick Bochette said. "I know a lot of us feel that our job is not done, and we have unfinished business in the AAC. We've seen the level that we can compete at, we just need to continue to do it on a consistent level to constantly challenge the top teams across our conference."
