Temple Drops Straight Sets to Houston

10.29.21 | Women's Volleyball

HOUSTON – Owls' graduate student Miray Bolukbasi garnered her third straight double-double with 16 kills and 14 digs, but it wasn't enough as Temple fell to the Houston Cougars (19-5, 8-3 AAC) on Friday night 13-25, 20-25, 17-25.
 
In the loss, Owls' setter Patrycja Zielinska had a team-high 28 assists for Temple. Including Bolukbasi, three Cherry and White players earned double-digit dig matches, including libero Falanika Danielson with 12 and Katerina Papazoglou chipping in with 10.


RECAPPING THE MATCH


Set 1

  • The two teams played to a 7-7 tie before the Houston went on 18-6 run close out the set and earn the 25-13 set one victory.
  • With the help of 10 team blocks, the Cougars outhit Temple by the count of .258 to .000.
  • Four UH players had at least two blocks in the frame.
  • Bolukbasi notched a set-high six kills for either team.


Set 2

  • In the second set, Houston jumped out its largest lead of the stanza, 13-5. The Owls were able to run off five straight points and 7-of-9 to shave the deficit to two points, 15-13. During the run, Turkish native Bolukbasi had four of her seven kills.
  • The Owls clawed their way to remain in the set, eventually cutting the deficit to 18-17, but Houston won seven of the last 10 points to win 25-20.
  • Temple won the hitting percentage battle in set two, .229 to .204.
  • The Owls held Houston's leading hitter, Abbie Jackson, to just five kills on 23 attempts.

 

Set 3

  • The Cougars led for all but two points in the third set, 25-17 win.
  • HU hit .378 to the TU's .053.
  • Houston had 14 kills on 37 attempts with no errors, while Temple had 11 kills on 38 attempts with nine errors.
  • Owls' outside hitter Katerina Papazoglou hit .500, with five kills on 10 attempts and no errors.
  • Jackson led the Cougars with a set-high in the third set win.

  

Individual Highlights


Temple falls to 5-17 overall on the season and 1-10 in the American.
