Dion Dawkins

Owls in the NFL - Week 16

12.27.21 | Football

In a game "brought to you by Temple University," according to NFL Network's Rich Eisen, Matt Rhule's (2013-16) Carolina Panthers hosted Bruce Arians' (1983-88) Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Experience, and Tom Brady, proved to be the difference as the Bucs won 32-6. The win clinched the NFC South for Arians and the defending Super Bowl champions who now hold the fourth seed in the NFC.

In the game, Haason Reddick (2012-16) made three tackles, Robby Anderson (2011-13, 2015) caught five passes for 58 yards, and Sean Chandler (2014-17) participated on special teams.

Dion Dawkins (2013-16), Tyler Matakevich (2012-15) and the Buffalo Bills made a strong playoff statement with a 33-21 win over the New England Patriots. The win gave Buffalo the edge in the AFC East heading into the season's final two weeks. Dawkins, who was coming off COVID protocols, did not start but played, and Matakevich made a tackle on special teams.

Although Dawkins did not start, he, Reddick, Anderson, and Atlanta's Matt Hennessy (2016-19), whose Falcons beat the Lions, 20-16, have become regular starters for their respective teams. This week, however, four other Owls joined them making seven Owls starting in the NFL in week 16.

Matt Ioannidis (2012-15) started at defensive tackle for the Washington Football Team. He had three tackles, a sack and two hits of Dak Prescott but the Cowboys prevailed, 56-14.

Chris Myarick (2015-19) was in familiar territory at Lincoln Financial Field when he got the start at tight end for the New York Giants against the Philadelphia Eagles. Myarick had one catch for six yards and Quincy Roche (2016-19) added three tackles in a loss, 34-10.

Linebacker Chapelle Russell (2015-19) made his first career start in his home state of New Jersey when he opened up at linebacker for Jacksonville against the New York Jets. He had a career-high 8 tackles (6 solos) but the Jaguars lost, 26-21.

Tavon Young (2012-15) started at cornerback for the Baltimore Ravens and had three tackles in a loss at Cincinnati, 41-21.

Despite being eliminated from playoff contention, Jacob Martin's (2014-17) Houston Texans have won consecutive games for the first time all season with a 41-29 win over the Los Angeles Chargers. Martin had one tackle.

Sharif Finch (2013-17) made his debut with New Orleans on Monday Night Football. Finch had five tackles in the Saints 20-3 loss to Miami.

Michael Dogbe (2014-18) had a tackle in a 22-16 loss by the Arizona Cardinals to Indianapolis. Harrison Hand's (2019) Minnesota Vikings lost a nail-biter to the Los Angeles Rams, 30-23. Brandon McManus (2009-12), Nate Hairston (2012-16) and the Denver Broncos were unlucky in Las Vegas, losing 17-13. McManus scored half of the Broncos points (1-1 PAT, 2-3 FGs).
